Guest guest
Hi Everyone, My daughter (3 in October) had her school district evaluation today and I am once again feeling confused. During the last evaluation, we were told that she had an oral-motor based speech issue---severely delayed expressive language disorder. Today, a different speech therapist is somewhat thinking it is apraxia. One challenge in identifying the underlying issue is that our daughter was also born with a cleft lip and palate---so there are definitely oral motor issues. She was also adopted and experienced early trauma. The possibility exists that she may be dealing with two issues-- the cleft issues and apraxia. I have read a lot and done my homework, but I am still struggling with how to determine whether or not this might be apraxia. Her expressive language is at about a 9-12 mo. range and her receptive language is average for her age. (and her primary language switched from Chinese to English at 16 mo. of age) She often leaves out sounds when trying to say words and only recently started to say words at all. She has a fairly limited range of sounds and substitutes some sounds for easier ones. She communicates primarily through sign language and uses sounds for words that really have no or little basis in the actual sound of the word---belts are called " mut mut " and hearts are a kind of happy squeal-like sound. I would greatly appreciate any advice about what to look for in a child her age. It would also be really helpful to hear from anyone who has a child with other complicating issues like being born with a cleft etc. Thanks!!!
