Guest guest
Hi, I have been giving my daughter (2 yrs 7 months old) the Nordic Naturals fish oil supplement for 3 months now. Initially, started with 1 ProEFA capsule everyday, then bumped it up to 2 ProEFA capsules a day and finally added 1 ProEPA capsule to the dosage. The gains were good. Her speech was developing (though slowly) even before the fish oils but I think it accelerated her speech development a little and certainly made her more intelligent. She presently has some 350 - 400 words or word approximations in her vocab and speaks some 3 word sentences. She is still missing the " s " , " k " , " g " , " f " , etc. sounds. She has become a bit of a " parrot " where she always repeats the last word or last couple of words of whatever she hears spoken around her or spoken to her. However, all of a sudden, for the last week or so she has started stammering a LOT. The stammering is of the kind where for eg. if we she is saying " birthday " , she will go like " bbbbbbbbbbbbbbirthday " . She has never done anything like this before! It started about a week ago but has now increased so much that it's happening almost in everything she speaks. For eg. if she says a 3 word sentence, most likely the 1st word will be stammered and the next 2 words will come out fine. Could this be because of the fish oils? Should I stop the oils for sometime? I have heard about some " plateau " in development with the fish oils... could someone please explain what this means and what should be done to overcome it? Also, what should I do about the stammering? Should I try to make her conscious of it whenever she does it or should I just ignore it and not make a big deal out of it in front of her? Thanks, Nikunj
Guest guest
Hi! Don't know if it's directly related to the fish oils since I've done an experiment by taking Josh off fish oils for awhile - and he developed a stammer as well. Every once in awhile, he'll do the stutter/stammer/dysfluency thing - sometimes emotional reasons, sometimes just not supporting his words with breath. Once thing I think has been found online here is that a ratio of 2:1 or 3:1 EPA:DHA seems to work best, depending on the kid, of course. You may want to try cutting back or adjusting ratios that you're giving your dd to see if it has any effect on the stammer. I try to not " ignore " the stammer with Josh but to give him time to get the word out and, if he really gets stuck on it, gently touch his arm or hand or cheek, tell him to " stop, think about your word, breath the word " and that seems to help. Breath support is really important for sound production and language development - yoga helped Josh as did slow breathing exercises. Then again, so did jumping and other movement that really got the breathing going! Just some suggestions.. Good Luck!
