Guest guest
Hi all. This is a follow-up to the ADA/504 Action Alert I recently sent out. Tomorrow (Tues, 6/24) is the National Call-In Day for HR 3195, the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (sometimes called the ADA Restoration Act). If you don't have a chance to call, you can at least email your federal House representative. (If you're not sure who that is, you can go to _http://www.house.gov_ (http://www.house.gov/) and click on Write Your Rep on the upper left side of the page.) Calling takes only a few minutes - all you have to do is say you're " calling to support HR 3195, the ADA Amendments Act of 2008, in its present form with no amendments. This bill will help adults and children with disabilities be protected against discrimination in schools and in the workplace. " They may take your name and address, and that's about it. Every call counts! HR 3195 will help extend the protections of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 to as many people with disabilities as possible, as originally intended by the bipartisan Congress that passed the ADA. Recent Supreme Court decisions have unreasonably narrowed the coverage of these acts, thereby excluding people who should be covered. This bill is a thoughtful compromise between disability advocates and the business community (and would also apply to schools in their application of section 504 to students with disabilities). Please call, or at least email, your House representative tomorrow (bill is expected to come to a vote as early as Wed.) Below is a sample email message you can use if you like (it's the one I wrote to my representative). Thanks for your help!! Sandy SAMPLE EMAIL/TALKING POINTS FOR PHONE CALL: I am writing to urge you to support HR 3195, the ADA Amendments Act of 2008 (sometimes called the ADA Restoration Act), in its present form without amendments when it comes to a vote (probably within the next week). This bill helps restore the original intent of the bipartisan Congress that passed the ADA, namely, to prevent discrimination against children and adults with disabilities. Recent Supreme Court decisions have unreasonably narrowed the ADA's coverage, and this bill would restore the proper balance. (This bill would also apply to section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, which applies to protect students with disabilities in the school setting.) This bill is a thoughtful compromise worked out between disability advocates and the business community, and as such, deserves your support. Thank you for considering my views.
