Guest guest
My son is nearly 4 and classified on the autism spectrum, primarily due to his verbal delays. I guess my big question is how much and what kind of fish oils should he take? He's been taking Nordic Naturals childrens (the strawberry liquid) since he was about 2. He's about 54 pounds and has always been big and tall for his age. He's on the GFCFSF diet, though I understand most fish oils have a little soy, including his current one. He will not swallow capsules or pills, but I'm a pro at blending liquids and powders into his drinks and smoothies. If you want more information, here you are: He didn't point, and only first waved " bye bye " at the age of 2 1/2. Eye contact is great now, and he is affectionate and happy. He loves to play with adults, but his imaginary play and appropriate play skills are poor for his age. He does not have many symptoms that are frequently associated with autism, like toe walking, head banging, sleep problems, inappropriate giggling, or stimming. But when we take him out in public he is sometimes difficult to control, he occasionally has meltdowns, and he is still severely speech delayed (and doesn't communicate much with signs or gestures, though he used a few signs until he started talking more.) He has made great progress recently, and is starting to sing along with a few songs, but he almost never can say all the words. He will only combine 2 words of his own to indicate a want or need, sometimes adding " please " (pwheeze) for a 3rd. Usually it's " want + more " " no want " " want up. " He has trouble with pronunciation and certain letters, like the " l " sound. He has major food texture issues, and gets most of his nutrition from smoothies. He also loves crunchy foods like pretzels and popcorn. I'm sure that the muscles he needs for clear speech are weak. We've starting listening therapy again, and we've using a number of supplements after going to a DAN doctor recently. (Doctor is a family practice and " real " MD.) He's taking vitamins and Learner's Edge, which has " L-carnitine, ginkgo, ginsend DMAE, Acetyl L- carnitine, L-theanine, L-carnosine, American ginseng (Eleuthero), Ginkgo biloba, and CoQ10. " And soy--sigh. Hopefully newer formulations won't have it. He's also currently taking anti-fungals, digestive enzymes, and Zyrtec for allergies. And advice or suggestions? The doctor didn't make any specific recommendations re the fish oil, she was just glad that we were taking something. Any other suggestions or things we should consider. Thank you so much!
