Guest guest
Hi there...I'd like to chime in if you don't mind.? My 6 year old son has acid reflux...and he also has hypotonia...which doesn't help.? BUT...I didn't like the way he swallowed either, so I took him to a swallowing specialist...she is actually a speech therapist but she specializes in swallowing disorders.? She did a videoflouroscopic swallow study and found that he had dysphagia, a swallowing disorder and that he aspirates thin liquids.? He cannot control the way that thin liquids go down and they actually " spill " to his airway.? He can't help it.? She immediately told us not to give him anything thin.? She told us to get Simplythick, which comes in a little packet..like a packet of ketchup sort of...and mix it into every single thing he drinks.? He can definitely handle this much better.? We had to put him on HONEY thick drinks to start with.? During one of his swallow studies she also saw that he had ENORMOUS tonsils and adenoids!!? They were so huge that they were touching each other!? No wonder my little guy had a hard time swallowing!? Since he got his tonsils out in August..and recouped from the surgery, we've had another swallow study and he has improved that he can now drink NECTAR thick drinks.? We are thrilled to see improvement...but, sure wish that he could just drink whatever he wanted!? Maybe someday. She is also having us do some of the talktools protocols.? (check out www.talktools.net)? We've done the whistles and bite blocks for strengthening and are now working on the straw protocol.? It's like a daily mouth exercise program. Good luck and I hope that this helps! in NH [ ] Re: If your child had Gerd My son had acid reflux and was given 1 tsp Maalox for a short time and then Zantac for a few months. I'm not a doctor, but seems to me that GERD/reflux is a symptom of a child that is already apraxic or hypotonic (low muscle tone). Therefore, the medications are not the cause of apraxia. Makes sense to me that children who have trouble with oral motor skills would have trouble drinking (either breastfeeding or bottlefeeding). My son still has trouble drinking liquids b/c he can't control how quickly they go down and then he gags/coughs. Seems to me that perhaps some of these children never had GERD to begin with. The complaint parents present is usually that the child is crying while feeding, then coughs or gags. Could just be difficult to control the liquids going down. If they did truly have GERD, that may be due to the fact that a lot of apraxic kids are hypotonic and have poor muscle tone - also potentially poor control of the stomach muscle that prevents acid reflux. Guest guest
Hmm...let me think.? I believe that his first swallow study was when he was 3.?? Also, my son's stomach empties slow, so we couldn't use thick-it because i guess they say that it can be binding, where the simply thick is not.? For someone without those issues, then I'm sure that you could use that.? The thick-it is available at the pharmacy...just ask the pharmacist.?? I pushed to have my insurance cover my son's simplythick because it is due to a swallowing disorder.? You can go online to www.simplythick.com to find out more about it.? They will actually send you a sample.? My son's swallowing specialist told us that because of the dysphagia, that anything that would turn to thin liquids in room temperature had to be thickened...shakes included...Even Mc's shakes!? LOL? So, she suggested the single serve pudding mixes mixed in a shake to thicken it up.? Wow...coffee shake with a chocolate pudding mix is delicious!!? ? (I just had to taste it!) Anyhow.? I hope that helps. [ ] Re: If your child had Gerd Wow. Thanks a lot. I'll definitely talk to the developmental ped we are scheduled to see in July about dysphagia and ask that the tonsils/adenoids be double-checked. We see an SLP who mentioned " thick-it " recently which sounds similar to the Simplythick. Do you get it online or from a local store? Sounds like it's worth trying. We've been giving milkshakes and smoothies which go down well, but would love more options. How old was your son when the videofluoroscopic swallow study was done? My son is 2 and we've asked the regular pediatrician about swallowing issues, but maybe it's time for a second opinion... Thanks again! > > > > > > most often zantac is prescribed.
