Guest guest
Hi everyone. I'm sure that everyone goes through this with their IEP teams...but, I have a few questions that I hope that I can get some help with.? My son has many many issues ... global dyspraxia, hypotonia, adhd, dysphagia, dysarthria, sensory issues, acid reflux, hiatal hernia, irregular heartbeat, and most recently seizures.? He has been in early intervention from when he was 9mos old to when he turned 3.? He has been in the school district receiving services from 3 to current.? (He just turned 6)? His overall speech/language levels show 2-3 yr level.? His gross motor evals show 3-3.9yr level.? His fine motor shows 2-4 (varies on which skills) and he has some scattered skills up to age 5.? BUT, like I say, he is 6.? I do agree with the evaluations.? I hate it...because it breaks my heart...but, they do show the levels that he is at. Now, my questions are these... If the schools evaluations show these profound delays...how can the school not justify daily speech with him?? They are saying 3x30/wk individual.? They are giving him 2x30pt/wk BUT THEY HAVE BEEN DOING THEM ON THE SAME DAY!!!? Umm....NOT!? I think he needs 2x30pt/wk on two different days with the pt herself and 3x30pt/wk on the other three days with his aide.? They have him in 1x30/wk of individual OT per week and 2x30/wk of group OT.? I don't feel that this will help him make the gains that he needs.?? I agree with all the research that I've seen that says that a child with dyspraxia needs tons and tons of repetition to learn a skill.? I've seen it first hand!! Actually, I see it every day...in everything that my son does..because he cannot watch other people and learn something.? He has to be shown hand over hand the first second third time and somethimes more. He has qualified for ESY each year.? He definitely needs that.? They are proposing a 3 day a week, 3.25 hours a day for 5 weeks program for the summer.? However, his current program is 3 full days (6.5hrs) and 2 half days (2.5hrs) and his fall schedule will be 5 full days (6.5hrs).? This proposed summer program is NOT going to help maintain what he has learned and to help keep his stamina up for a full schedule in the fall.? He will also have 4 entire weeks during the summer with no programming at all!? I don't feel that this cookie cutter summer program is going to meet his needs.? Actually, I don't think that they are basing his programming on his needs at all...that they are basing it on convenience. Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!! Guest guest
They can only address the issues that relate to his education--which it seems they are. My 7DD has global delays, Severe Apraxia and CP. She is just finishing 2nd grade. She has been getting Speech 3x a week Individual since K-they have just added 1G for next year to make it 4x week. Her age levels showed about the same as what you described. About the OT 2x in the same day? That does not seem right--but you should also consider they are scheduling services for an entire school full of kids who need services. There also has to be time in their day for Art, Music, Recess, Lunch, OT PT and Gym and classroom work! Five days of speech sounds like an awful lot when you consider what else needs to be part of their day. What is PT with his aide? As far as ESY =is there a full-day program or only the 1/2 day? Most districts offer a 5 or 6 week ESY...I heard someone mention a 4week ESY program! Maybe say you'd like the full-day if they offer it. But remember that ESY mostly consists of some classroom work and making sure they get their therapies. Again==it could be a scheduling issue. They should keep it the same as during the school year--but their day doesnt include recess, art, music and not as much class work..just enough to re-iterate what they did during the year. My dd did very, very well with her Edmark Reading Program but in talking to her TA at school--all they can do is send over the paperwork to where her ESY is being held. If the ESY teachers are not well versed in Edmark reading--they'll do as much as they can with her. The four weeks after ESY ends will go fast and I'd not worry about regression. They also deserve a bit of a summer break like other kids. > > Hi everyone. > > I'm sure that everyone goes through this with their IEP teams...but, I have a few questions that I hope that I can get some help with.? Guest guest
I understand that they are scheduling an entire school full of kids; however, I have to worry about my own...and if there is too much for the therapists/teachers to handle, then they need to hire more therapists/teachers. The ESY proposed to us is only Tues, Weds, Thurs from 8:30-11:45..which is only 9.75hrs/week ... and during that time they want to squeeze in his related services.? Therefore, he will be losing the class time if the related services are worked into this time and not added onto the end of the day.? [ ] Re: evals show EXTREME DELAY - UNITS OF SERVICE PROPOSED DON'T MATCH They can only address the issues that relate to his education--which it seems they are. Guest guest
Is there a full-day ESY available? If you reject ESY--what other options are there? Have you spoken to the school personnel about your concerns..maybe they agree that he needs more services--but only you can request a meeting for changes to be made. good luck. what does PT with his aide mean? > > The ESY proposed to us is only Tues, Weds, Thurs from 8:30-11:45..which is only 9.75hrs/week ... and during that time they want to squeeze in his related services.? Guest guest
No, there is no full day ESY available.? This is all that they are offering...period.? Yes, I've spoken with them numerous times.? My son has a 27page IEP.? We've met 3 different times for 1 1/2 hours each to try to get things straightened out.? They do not feel that he needs more services.? They are almost saying like it or lump it. [ ] Re: evals show EXTREME DELAY - UNITS OF SERVICE PROPOSED DON'T MATCH Is there a full-day ESY available? If you reject ESY--what other options are there?
