Guest guest
you begin with a request to the school with the school psychologist. express your concerns and have your child evaluated. in the meantime, if you can afford it, get your own eval. very important. tell the school you want to schedule an iep. if you have an iep in the beginning (like pre-k or k), you get an annual iep meeting and a tri-annual every 3 yrs. with the tri-annual, the child gets a full on eval from all the different entities (speech, ot, ape, etc) . the only way services can be cancelled is if the school dist decides the child no longer has specific needs that will affect his/her education. also, the parents input is very critical to the iep meeting. this is where independent evals really come in handy. also, knowing the law. what state do you live in? in california, you can order the " composite of laws for special education " . there is also section 504 of the rehabilitation act: a child who may have problems in learning may not be found eligible for special education services because he/she does not fit into one of the special ed eligibility categories and/or becuase their leanring problems are not severe enough for the student to qualify for special ed. such a child, however, may be eligible for special services and program modifications under a federal anti-discrimination law designed to reasonably accommodate the student's condition so that his/her needs are met as adequately as the needs of students without disabilities. request the child be eval under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. vicki
Guest guest
My son gets his first (3 year old) IEP meeting for the school district in 2 weeks. He took all the assessments as well as an OT (they were not very happy about that one). Can I get advice on what Speech services and OT services you all have received . My son who is apraxic as well as nos-pdd. I will have his speech path as well as a PEP advocate with us at the meeting. I think they what him in the 4 day program for 2 1/2 hours. As of the exact serveses I am not sure what they would like to give him. I am pretty nerves he is finally transitioning to 3... OMG I have heard it either goes very well/ totally opposite. thanks. Guest guest
In my experience as a speech language pathologist consulting with districts and working in private practice, the typical protocol was twice weekly individual speech services for 20 - 30 minutes and once weekly language enrichment group for 30 minutes. Of course this did vary somewhat depending on individual needs, but typically for a 2 1/2 hour program, 5 days a week; this is what I observed. I have had parents unhappy with this amount of service time come to me for additional services, however this was at their own expense - districts typically won't compensate parents for these sessions. Be prepared to hear the following as justification for less services, " the classroom environment in highly language enriched " or " the speech therapist is always collaborating with the teacher to make the classroom a language enriched environment " ...this usually (not always, but usually) means there is a shortage of speech therapists in schools so we have to minimize services for individuals... I wish you the best of luck and hope that you are working with a district that will take your child's individual needs into account when writing the IEP. Theresa Gabler, M.S. Guest guest
in ohio, yes. Roxanna Whenever I feel blue, I start breathing again. ( ) IEP question Once you sign the IEP and then decide to use the Austim Schloarship for private schooling outside of the district, do you have to go back to the district every year for a IEP to utilize the Schloarship funds for the next year?
