Guest guest
First off, I just wanted to say Hi, glad to see another Michigander and know that someone is dealing with the same systems that we are. The school that my son goes to doesn't offer seperate speech therapy, just group and OT.So I'm not sure what to do there. I would definitely request another IEP ASAP, as I know that is within your rights. If you must correspond wth the liar, use email or letters, that way there is a record of what has been said. Given time you may be able to trip her up. Also, if the school there is like the school here and you attend with your child, take a notebook and make a minute by minute list of what is done in the classroom. If the teacher objects, make a stink about the fact that an educator is trying to make it more difficult for you to continue your childs education at home. For all they need to know, that is why you are making the list. That's about all I can come up with right now. If you get too frustrated, feel free to email me. My son is finally aging out of Early On, but I did have a really good worker when we dealt with them. I would suggest talking to the Early On worker directly. Some of them are amazingly human. Others not so much. Best of luck. Practice random acts of kindness... From: sandy_tanana <sandy_tanana@...> Subject: [ ] Early Intervention Speech- NOT!!!! HELP! Date: Thursday, November 20, 2008, 8:36 PM Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone else has had the same experience as our family. is in the Early On program through the Plymouth Canton Community Schools in Michigan. She is 2 years 4 months and at IEP time we had to fight to get speech at school. She is now receiving group " speech " 2 times a week and a one on one " speech " once a week. She then goes 2 times a week to the Kaufman Center and is making gains using that approach. Our problem is that the Early On speech seems to be all OT- we were told they don't do sounds. does pegs, puzzles, motor- room,etc.... with the Early On speech therapist. I contacted the special ed pre-school dept head and told her that is making gains using the Kaufman approach and we needed someone trained at school in that method. Well the dept. head had the speech teacher at school call the speech therapist at the Kaufman Center. I though ok- this is good. Come to find out- the teacher told ALL lies to the therapist and said they were doing sounds, etc.. I am so ticked off- because she completely lied about what she is doing. What can I do now? The bottom line is that needs consistancy on the Kaufman method at school to keep making gains. She sees a seperate OT at school and at the Kaufman Center- so the speech teacher doesn't need to do pegs, puzzles, motor room etc... What are my rights with Early On? How much can I demand from the schools? Thank you so much- I know I vented, but I am SO mad that they totally lied to the therapist. I know a lot of you are very knowledgable. Guest guest
Hi, Are you in the room with your daughter while this speech session is going on in the school? What is the speech therapist saying while they use the puzzles and toys? Often times SLPS use play based therapy to achieve sounds and develop language skills. > > > > From: sandy_tanana <sandy_tanana@...> > Subject: [ ] Early Intervention Speech- NOT!!!! Guest guest
Thank you for the reply- yes we are in the room. When the therapist was questioned by us, she said they don't use sounds in this program. How can speech be taught by just puzzles and pegs? Guest guest
Sandy what is a speech teacher? Is she a CCC SLP? If the speech teacher told the speech therapist at the Kaufman Center that she is using sounds and told you in person she does not use sounds in the program then you need to document this in writing and ask for an explanation. What is written into the IEP? Over the weekend I'll see if I can get our resident expert Miss Cheryl http://cherab.org/about/cheryl.html to answer. I wonder if knows about this too?...She's awesome -and a member of this group. I'd let her know you need some help! =====
Guest guest
Okay, so can you describe a little bit more what the SLP is saying or talking about when playing with these puzzles/peg toys with your child? She can't just be sitting there " saying put the pieces in " as that isn't speech therapy, what else is she doing? Is she trying to get your daughter to follow directions (language) for example? If you can give a little more description that would give us a better idea of whats going on? > > Thank you for the reply- yes we are in the room.
