Guest guest
Kris, I am glad your daughter is recovering well from her illness. All the best to you and your family, Elena From: kristinakate1213 <kris.justice@...> Subject: [ ] Flu Warning... Date: Tuesday, November 18, 2008, 5:44 PM i have been out of touch lately, but i just want to warn others about the dangers of Influenza. for those of you with children that have asthma, reactive airway disease or any other pulmonary ailments, please consider getting your child the Flu shot. We had a vaccination scheduled for , but she had a sinus infection...so we put it off. last wednesday, i got a call from school that she had " thrown up " .she did not present with fever, malaise, only a slight cough, and then the vomiting. i took her to the pediatrician, and she uncovered pneumonia after listening to her chest and an x-ray to confirm the location. she was admitted to the hospital, and her viral panel came back positive for the Flu and as a result, pneumoccocal pneumonia. this is the leading cause of death after getting the Flu! she was treated with IV antibiotics, nebulizers, and steroids for 72 hours...the hospital was full of kids with the same diagnosis. it is going to be a long hard Flu season according to her pulmonologist! i did manage to read the " debate " about vaccines, so please do not reply to me, or criticize my decision, i am putting this out as a warning to others about the seriousness of influenza. please take it for what it is worth, and our experience with what can be a deadly virus. thankfully she is recovering nicely, and i am taking our 6 year old to get his Flu shot in the morning and me and my husband are getting ours in the afternoon tomorrow. Guest guest
I have heard talk on some of the other boards about a flu 'mist' that might be good to look at/evaluate if you need the vaccination. Also be sure to ask for mercury free if doing flu shots. So sorry for this horrible experience Kris. I hope that gets better soon. Viruses are nasty things.... We are thankful that she's recovering now and hope she gets back to being a regular kid really soon. Guest guest
hey janice thanks for your concern about kate. i asked her Dr. about Flumist for both of my kids...unfortunately it is contraindicated in kids with a history of asthma/reactive airway disease (kate) and prior pneumonias (my son)....so we are stuck with shots. thankfully our Dr. is VERY careful with kate and chet so they get the mercury free stuff. kris > >
Guest guest
Just a quick warning about the Flu mist, however-- this is an ACTIVE/LIVE VIRUS vaccine!!!! That means the child or person who gets it should NOT come in contact with the immuno-suppressed or compromised health, those on chemo, infants/babies, etc bek In a message dated 11/19/2008 7:16:22 A.M. Guest guest
So doesn't this mean immuno-suppressed people shouldn't get the nasal flu mist? If others around are at risk of complications from the flu if immuno-suppressed, what does that say about the immuno-suppressed person who gets the full dose? I don't know about this one for the sensitive people who want to avoid the mercury...seems like getting the virus could be equally damaging to the immune system fin their case and it sounds like building the immune system is their safest bet too. Guest guest
Auto immune diseases are also a big no-no!!! If you already have an auto immune disease, it is a bad idea to add more burden to your health!!! You need to load up on immune boosters instead!!! Guest guest
Well personally-- I am one that feels that the flu mist is contraindicated for immunosuppressed, but I know Drs will say the opposite bek In a message dated 11/20/2008 8:10:21 A.M.
