What is the most likely diagnosis, neurologically speaking, for a child in

middle school who in junior high still displays hesitant, halting speech?

There could be a number of reasons, including apraxia, or even stuttering or

stammering. Has the child been to an SLP for an evaluation? He or she may be

able to secure speech therapy in an IEP. Tell us a bit more about this child's

history. Was he a late talker, how did he speak through the years? When did he

become intelligible to others or was that never an issue?

Here's a matrix on this type of speech developed for school based SLPs that can

give you a guide for fluency.

If anoriginal diagnosis of verbal apraxia was given to the child, then you have

a possible answer, as Apraxia is considered to be a lifelong condition.

Apraxia could be one explanation, but not all with apraxia fit this profile when

older while most that stutter or stammer would. There are not enough details

from the poster which is why I asked for more background.

I am one person of a large group of people who would like to hear from a

significant number (more than one or two) of people who were diagnosed with

severe verbal apraxia as a very young child and now who speak quite well. I have

" read " some testimonies or heard aut them, but I would actually like to meet

this group of people.
