Guest guest
Hi Guen, we did AIT twice with when she was about 6 and saw good results, the best of which was that she came home and potty trained immediately afterward~ so it definitely helped her neurologically in some way. It was difficult to tell about the hearing sensitivity because she developed ear infections again and had to have a second set of tubes so whatever gains made seemed to have been lost. At that time it was commonly thought that AIT was a once in a lifetime process however current thinking is that it definitely needs to be repeated. Because it is so expensive you might want to consider one of the at-home approaches such as Samonas or Ease which you can implement repeatedly. There is a lady among us named Kay Ness who might want to chime in here as she is aquainted with newer protocals. It is a complementary therapy~ then again I'm not sure there are many scientifically " proven " therapies for autism and different approaches seem to help different kids. Sadly it's pretty much a trial and error thing. Some folks have gotten AIT paid for by insurance under the guise of speech therapy treatments. I have heard the best reports from parents of lower functioning kids; I have heard reports of it doing nothing, and I have heard reports of worsened behaviors which eventually resolved. Have you read " Hearing Equals Behavior? " Good luck whatever you decide and please let us know. Guest guest
Guen, Regarding your question about AIT, we tried this twice with our son Gene who has DS and autism. This was when he was about 6 and 7 and now he is 11. Truthfully, I saw few results. We had hoped it would help his speech but I could not say that all of a sudden we saw a change. Jackie Rockwell in Ohio comes up to Michigan to do this and she is trained in the Berard method. It was expensive and the only reason we went for it twice was because the second time it was free. It certainly didn't harm Gene in any way that I could tell. He really enjoyed the listening sessions. I hear more talk about a program called Fast Forward now..but I have not really had a chance to look into it. Lauri
Guest guest
Dear Sherry, Thank you for your reply. The psyocologist mentioned that he does not like samonas. But did not explain why. Because I asked too many questions he asked me to take an appointment. So I had the impression that these two were different things. Oh, sometimes I really am tired of " researching " . Thanks > Chris > Yes, it is indeed expensive and if it's the same as the one I know of, Intensive as well. The place where Maddie used to receive sensory integration therapy offered it twice a year. I always opted out because I knew she wouldn't keep those head phones on and I wasn't quite *sold* on it. The AIT trainer explained to me that it was sort of like conditioning. An example she used was imagine that you live next to a train station and every night the train wakes you up. You can be conditioned to sleep through it. They had said that often kids would scream with the phones on, but then eventually they'd stop. Well, I wasn't willing to *force* Maddie to sit with headphones on. And anyway, ultimately, her sensivities got MUCH better by themselves over time. She's still not 100%, but WAY WAY better than she was. Guest guest
Just a note, I saw a study last fall that showed AIT did not help and actually made some socialization factors worse for the participants involved. I was looking for it, and couldn't find it. You may want to check out Listening Therapy (www.vitalsounds.com) Our speech therapist recommended it, and we had very good results with our son using it. He went from putting his hands over his ears and tantruming at all ambient music (even elevator music in the grocery store) to being able to tolerate it. I also found that having him listen to music would settle him down in the middle of a tantrum. Also later, as his speech improved, and he would ask to listen to the music, he told me " It helps my school not be so loud. " We bought a cd player, Sonheiser (SP?) headphones and a fanny pack. We had him listen 30 minutes in the am and 30 minutes in the pm. We rented the CDs from the therapy place. Each month we would move to a new cd. Over the course of 6 months we spent a total of about $650 on the program.

Guest guest
Hi Rob... We started our 5 yr old in AIT a few weeks ago. He can only get in 2 to 3 days a week. The SLP says they like to do at least 1 hour per day for 10 days in a row. The first thing we needed to do was get him used to wearing head phones for at least 30 minutes. We got Braxton a portable CD player with the headphones & we put it in a back pack. We had him wear it when we went in the car. We put classical music in to play. As far as how it is working...we have seen changes. At first, he was flapping & stimming more. SLP says this is normal as his system is re-organizing. Then we noticed this last week, him slowing down. We are starting to get more sounds out of him also. This site may be helpful in locating someone in your area. http://64.202.182.52/saitwebsite/index.html I am sorry I can't be of very much help. > 2. Guest guest
>Hi We have used the Johansen method (on CD) over the past 6 mths and have noticed is calmer at bed times and initially slept better (although he was sleeping 11 hrs anyway) There is a decrease in sound sensitivity also. I have heard that the listening programme is very good and more technologically advanced (less background noise) than Johansen. The soundlearningcentre info@... in London does combined vision therapy with auditory integration. We plan to do this in the Summer. It involves 20 mins in the pm daily for 7 days (I think followed by further 7 days) sometimes they'll travel out if you can group together a few clients - not sure if this is just for AIT , not combined with vision. I believe this is based on the Berard Method on which the book Sound of a Miracle, about recovered child by Anabel Stehli is based. Guest guest
Hi This sounds great value - can only compare with Johansen - We've paid £75 for initial consult and then £25 ea for 6 discs which we are now rotating. Soundlearningcentre is around £1,000 - £1,500 but more I'm sure for vision also. The more I think about it, the more I am convinced J has vision issues hence our thinking about combined approach. Guest guest
Elaine, A few years ago we had a very severe sound sensitivity problem with our son. We were living abroad at the time (in Oz) and he became extreemly sensitive all of a sudden to the bird noise in the garden (mainly Mynah birds which caw very loudly), it became so bad that he refused to go in the garden, even getting him from the house to the car was difficult, and if he heard the birds whilst inside he would be beside himself, it was a very difficult time for us. Anyway to cut a long story short we eventually solved the problem by treating his gut problems, he was put on a course of Flagyl to treat parasites and bingo almost overnight the problem disappeared. Guest guest
Hi Nikki, does have some big gut issues which are always there but worsen from time to time.  He has always had minor issues in relation to his ears but are much worse at the moment.  I do think that it could be gut related too and as it is always there to some degree hope that some AIT might compliment the gut treatments. Does that make sense?
