Guest guest
Apraxia has many names--verbal apraxia, verbal dyspraxia, developmental apraxia of speech, childhood apraxia of speech, and so on... It is very confusing when first starting out. apraxia is usually used to describe speech. Global apraxia/dyspraxia is usually used to describe apraxia in the body. Below is some links for you to read through...I like to keep it simple--my son has verbal apraxia, and mild Sensory Integration Dysfunction. I will also add a link in for a good checklist for Sensory issues. http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/voice/apraxia.htm What is apraxia of speech? Apraxia of speech, also known as verbal apraxia or dyspraxia, is a speech disorder in which a person has trouble saying what he or she wants to say correctly and consistently. It is not due to weakness or paralysis of the speech muscles (the muscles of the face, tongue, and lips). The severity of apraxia of speech can range from mild to severe. http://www.shop-in-service.com/oral_apraxia.htm Explains oral apraxia and symptoms /message/60759 Info on dyspraxia/global apraxia http://www.sensory-processing-disorder.com/index.html Information on Sensory Integration Dysfunction On the menu on the left, click on symptoms checklist See which universities in Florida have speech-language departments and whether they offer speech therapy through an affiliated clinic. http://www.speechville.com/universities/florida.html *Google = list of Child Neurologist + Gainesville,FL *Google = list of child neurologist + jacksonville, FL You can also try googling = list of child neurologist + hometown, FL and see what is closest. Not sure about your insurance, but I had to call to see what doctors were on the list for us to go and see. Ours was called a child neurologist--Child Neurology Associates, P.C. Developmental Pediatrician might also be helpful. Sometimes you can get a free evaluation at Universities and clinics. Also try to get a speech evaluation outside of the school district. You can try to google this info also...Google = list of speech clinics + hometown, FL. You might get a list of clinics to call for an evaluation. You can call and ask about pricing for evaluation and if the SLP is familiar with apraxia.
