Apple Cider Vinegar for Constipation

I FOUND THIS POST IN ONE OF MY GROUPS AND THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE!!!

My 5 yr old son has always suffered from constipation, having bowel movements

every 2-4 days and it was always very difficult for him to push, as he has to

pass hard pellets first. We've tried many things, but what we found most

successful is giving apple cider vinegar every day. Ever since the 3rd day on

the vinegar, he has been having 1-2 bowel movements every day and no more hard

pellets to pass.

We use Bragg's organic unfiltered apple cider vinegar. Two teaspoons vinegar

with two teaspoons honey in a cup of water first thing in the morning and then

in the afternoon when he gets back from school.

With the honey, it doesn't taste too bad, sort of like a vinegar lemonade. I

either offer it with a straw or use a syringe when he resists, but it's not too

bad. He's gotten used to it. Apple cider vinegar has many other benefits,

including making the stomach pH more alkaline, helping with digestion and gut

bacteria, relieving chronic fatigue, etc. Now, I make a cup for everyone in the

morning,

including my soon to be 3 yr old. He loves it and requests his " honey water " . I

just leave out the vinegar part! :)

We have not tried Miralax or Oxypowder. I always wanted to give something

natural. Prune juice worked well too, but I only gave it on an as needed basis.

One cup and 10-15 minutes, he will go. But with the vinegar every day, he has

become much more consistent.

Love, Gabby. :0)

Wow, I've been dealing with Josh's constipation for 10 years now, using prune or

pear juice, sometimes apricot juice - they all work on an as-needed basis.  And

yes, some of the prune juice and it seems within minutes things just " move

along! "   :-)  But I like the apple cider vinegar idea on a daily basis - I'm

going to try it with Josh.  Thanks for sharing this!

I have to laugh about this whole thing - don't know if anyone watches Two and a

Half Men, but there was an episode where the kid is moody, cranky, out-of-sorts,

etc. and , the father, is trying to figure out the psychological basis for

the problem - is it the divorce, is it school, is it whatever.  The housekeeper

(beautifully played by Conchita Farrell, I think her name is), unbeknownst to

the father and uncle, gives the kid what appears to be a whole bottle of prune

juice.  The next morning, the kid is happy, asking to do things with dad, etc.

Ain't it the truth!

Dear Gabby -

Yep, I don't get to watch the new seasons since we're usually doing some Special

Olympics practice or homework or therapy or whatever.  But, we have it here in

the Chicago area at 10:30 p.m. in reruns - that's about when my day is just

winding down so I get to kick back and just crack up.  That episode, though, had

me rolling!

Well, some vinegars do contain trace amounts of gluten, but raw, unfiltered

apple cider vinegar (Braggs) shouldn't have any.  We've been using it a LOT for

salad dressing since the oils in most salad dressings are not healthy so we make

our own with herbs, avocado, and used to be w.yogurt  and Parmesan, garlic etc.

Now we casein free so the dairy is out but the avocado works great

a, apple cider vinegar helps with GERD as well and other gastro

intestinal issues like bad bacteria, which is often at the root of GERD, and

sometimes asthma as well which is the result of GERD sometimes.  If bad bacteria

was creating the constipation--as it tends to upset gastric juices and either

produce too much or too little, but the idea is the same, an intestinal

unbalance in the micro climate in there. Anyway, it is really a great remedy for

many disorders: Read this:

http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/acvinegar.html

Also Manuka Honey helps with digestive issues, not sure about the constipation

part, but definitely GERD, and i do remember my mom being told by the doctor

when i was a child to give me honey, one teaspoon before every meal to prevent

constipation, so the Manuka one might work well for that too, it has

antibacterial effects and yes, constipation is often a sign of poor

gastro-intestinal balance.

All the best,

Elena

Gluten.  I had no idea it had gluten in it.  I better check it out to see

because it sounds so good and healthy.

Hopefully, it is gluten free.

Dana, the gluten is not specified in vinegars as an ingredient obviously, but

Celiacs know vinegar can affect them and that's because they use fermented

grains often times in regular vinegar along with whatever else.

Some claim the proteins do not exist in that form, but others report

sensitivities. Apple Cider vinegar, if pure, and non-contaminated with grain

vinegars should be safe. I can't imagine how gluten would get into it or why,

but let us know what you find out.

Here's the info about the white vinegar being grain based and possibly posing a

problem. I think the Celiac site has it listed as problematic too. But not the

apple cider, not the apple cider one, not if it's organic pure, unfiltered

etc...

The following labeled ingredients may indicate the presence of wheat protein:

Gelatinized starchNatural flavoringHydrolyzed vegetable proteinModified

food starchModified starchCheck with company

Whey (all forms Whey is dairy)Whey Protein concentrate Whey Sodium

CaseinateWhite Grain Vinegar White Vinegar
