Computer Virus Alert

CALLWAVE -- HEAR WHO'S CALLING WHILE YOU'RE ONLINE...FREE! The Internet Answering Machine can be downloaded in less than a minute! For more information on this advertisement click here.Dear Bonnie Locklear,Here is a computer security update:On August 5, a vulnerability in Netscape Communicator and Netscape Navigator was made public. A backdoor exploit program known as Brown Orifice was created which takes advantage of a hole in the browser which could allow an attacker to access any file on the victim's system or the locally connected network. Navigator users could be affected by Brown Orifice by visiting an untrusted website that contains the program, or by being lured to such a website by email containing applets that lead them back to the website. While presently the exploit only allows read capabilities, the capabilities to write on the victim's site could eventually be developed.Affected Versions:Netscape Communicator 4.74 and earlier with Java and downloadable plugins enabled. Netscape Navigator 4.74 and earlier with Java and downloadable plugins enabled.Affected Platforms:All platforms on which Java and Netscape are available are vulnerable.Unaffected Platforms:Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla are not currently affected. Browsers with Java disabled are not affected.Until a fix becomes available, Java should be disabled in the browser. Security specialists recommend that you evaluate your need for Java functionality in Netscape versus the risk presented by this problem and take appropriate action.Information about this exploit has appeared on several popular web sites including Slashdot and BugTraq. It is expected that as knowledge of the exploit, its source code, and variations become more widespread, the risk to users systems will increase.

>

> Hi All, I received this e-mail from an acquaintance who checked with

>Norton Anti-Virus, and they are gearing up for this virus!

>

> She checked Snopes (URL above:), and it is for real!!

>

> Get this E-mail message sent around to your contacts ASAP.

>

> PLEASE FORWARD THIS WARNING AMONG FRIENDS, FAMILY AND CONTACTS!

>

> You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message

>with

>an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD FROM HALLMARK,' regardless of who sent it

>to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which 'burns' the whole

>hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be received from someone who

>has your e-mail address in his/her contact list. This is the reason why you

>need to send this e-mail to all your contacts It is better to receive this

>message 25 times than to receive the virus and open it.

>

> If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD,' even though sent to you by a

>friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer immediately.

>

> This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by

>Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was discovered by

>McAfee yesterday, and there is no repair yet for this kind of virus. This

>virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard Disc, where the vital

>information is kept.

>

> COPY THIS E-MAIL, AND SEND IT TO YOUR FRIENDS. REMEMBER: IF YOU SEND IT

>TO

>THEM, YOU WILL BENEFIT ALL OF US

>

> Snopes lists all the names it could come in.
