Try masking it in food. My older, non-apraxic son thought that apple

sauce masked the taste completely. We tried juice, yogurt and a few

other things, but he could taste it in those things.

My apraxic son actually likes the taste. He also gobbles fish

whenever I make it. He can swallow pills now which does make it a lot

easier. My daughter also begs to take it. She just chews the

capsules and has since she was 12 months old.

Hi ,

you'll probably gets tons of answers on this one!  When we first started out I

would squeeze the

gelcap into a small thing of yogourt.  I tried it in his juice, but a) found out

quickly he didn't like

juice and b)most of the dose would stick to the sides of the cup.

other things to try it in are applesauce, pear sauce and on particularly bad

days, a teaspoon of

chocolate sauce.  I used to do it in a flavoured yogourt but then he'd like the

vanilla, but now he

just prefers the taste of the oil straight up.  Should have guessed that one as

his favorite foods are

sushi, smoked salmon, escargot and cheese so stinky it melts your socks off!!!

hope that helps

I know this might sound silly, but I a good tip I learned for my son from

my sister in law was when you lay the child down on bed on his/her back have

the neck laying off a bit from the edge of bed. As soon as you are going

to squirt the dropper of liquid medicine blow directly in their face and

squirt. It works!!!!1

He protests - of course - I would too. But he ends up swallowing it.

It hasn't gotten better with time - unfortunately and I hope that I am not

I tried putting into juice, but he gaggs from it. And I doubt he will take

I hope that someone reading this thread has some alternative method we can

try.

Good luck.

Hi -

I know most moms here use the Nordic Naturals Fish Oils and they probably have

some ideas for you. However, my 3 year old son has Apraxia and absolutely WILL

NOT take any yucky fish oils in any form. Not even shaken into a smoothie. So,

we use Coromega. You can get Coromega from most drugs stores, and its the fish

oils without the nasty taste. It comes in what looks like a little ketchup

packet and they have lots of different flavors. We have had the best success

with the Orange flavor. This stuff has worked absolute WONDERS for our son. Just

taking Coromega and Voila! He talks. It's amazing, I've done very little other

stuff such as speech therapies and whatnot because he's done so well with just

Coromega for now. So, you may want to look into that if regular fish oils are a

problem like they were for my son.

Hello , I use the liquid children's formula from Nordic Naturals and

it has a lemony taste. I mix it in jogurt or applesauce and takes it

without any issues. I mix the recommended amount in a whole thing of jogurt

or drink jogurt and she loves it. Tried it myself and it tastes lemony not

fishy.

Hi ,

Have you tried teaching your son to swallow pills? Here's a link to lecture

from a past DAN! conference that teaches pill swallowing. It may be worth a

I tried the Coromega packs when my son was 3. I was successful for a long

time secretly squeezing the Orange flavored ones into his Orange Juice. As

he got older (and wiser) he protested about the taste and refused to drink

juice; even when it was no longer " doctored " up. I gave up. Recently,

however, he takes the packets out of the fridge on his own (now 4 years old)

and

squeezes the whole thing into his mouth! Go figure! He also loves the

Nordic Gummies; I have to limit him or he'll eat too many. Sorry, this isn't

real advise..but for us it was just the passage of time.

I put the fish oils into a syringe

(one designed for oral medication).

I treat it like medicine (where there

is no option NOT to take it. He gets

a chaser of strongly flavored juice afterwards.

We had to start with a small amount

and improve his tolerance to it.

Sometimes he still balks at it, but he

still has to take it. I would recommend

following it with a treat or something

he really likes to kill the taste. We

were never able to hide it in anything.

That was (for my son) just a larger

volume of something yucky to tolerate.

The days he really balks I ask him

if he wants to talk better. He says

yes. I tell him that I know it is yucky

but that it helps him and he becomes

more willing to take it. He still does

not like it though.

Good luck!!

how about a smoothie or yogurt something thicker?

it seems to hide the oily instead of juice.

Does he like yogurt or apple sauce or fruit cups? I found that juice did not

work well at all, so we tried fruit cups (Motts brand for example) the banana

apple pureed fruit works well for us. I squeeze the capsules into the fruit mix

with a metal spoon (plastic kid spoons seem to stay slimy and I don´t want to

waste any of the oil!I also always serve in a ceramic mug not plastic containter

for this reason) and she took it no problem and she was a very picky

eater! That´s why I tried the fruit cup since she had a very narrow food list!

She would smell everything before eating it! This fruit cup routine has worked

for us for the last 10 months and we are now at 5 capsules so I am sure she can

taste the lemon flavour quite well now but since we started with just one

capsule and gradually worked our way up I think she kind of got accustomed to

the taste. (??) The good news is that her food choices have broadened and she

practically eats everything. (Due to the fish oil therapy her food texture

issues started to dissapear...it was incredible, I can´t accredit it to any

other thing!)

Try a 3 tablespoons of the fruit mixed with 1 capsule, see if he notices. Then

work your way up...Otherwise find something that your child really loves and try

put it in that...chocolate milk works well too but use a small glass and put

only a small portion of milk and the capsule so that you can insist that he

finish it! If its his usual portion 250ml or more he may not want to finish it

all and then you will never know if he had all the oil or not.

Hope this helps!

My son really enjoys chewing up the capsules, amazingly. We started when he was

2 1/2 and now it's a normal end to breakfast and dinner. When our youngest was

about 15 months he started taking them too, also chewing the capsules up. Then

he signs for more! I'm sure it helps that they're strawberry flavored. (my 3 yr

old with apraxia is allergic to citrus so we couldn't do lemon flavored).

Good luck!
