Guest guest
When my dyspraxic/DSI child was entering the preschool disabled program they pushed us off on evaluating him for PT/OT even though he was receiving 2 hrs of each a week through EI. They pushed his eval off to 2 weeks before he was supposed to start and the IEP meeting was 1 week before he was supposed to start. At the evals, I finally realized they had no intention of giving him private OT/PT despite EI reports that he needed it and I hired a child advocate to go to the IEP mtg with me. Overnight things changed. We went in prepared to battle them and all of a sudden their tune changed and they took my EI reports and gave my son the services he needed. I guess what I'm saying is stop being so accomodating with them. Push to get the evals done, call them every day or every week to check on the progress, and if you can afford it or if necessary get an advocate on your side. Usually the school will try to avoid mediation at all costs. Don't be afraid to fight for what you need for your child. Good luck. > > Hi, > > Looking for suggestions and just needed to vent. Guest guest
As you probably know already they have 90 days to complete the eval once written permission from the oarent/guardian is given (I assume you signed perm to eval?). As soon as it's signed the timeline starts ticking. All pcs of the eval should be complete before then (now if they choose to add services at a later date, then that can be added, but if your child gets OT,PT, ST, APE & Interventin services, then all of those staff should complete an eval and write a report. However that being said, I did have my prek school psych (new to us this apst year) say to me that if " we " feel a child go go on to Kdg w/o any services, then we do NOT have to eval him/her. As I said this is new to me, we've always done a re-eval before going to school age, so I don't really know if this a new law or just a different interpretation of the law. The school district where I live is different than the one where I teach. At home they wil let the IEP " expire " and write a new one in Aug/Sept at the beg of the school year, where I work, we do a new IEP each year as the come up for the annual review (sometimes doing multiple ones for same child if going ot kdg the next year and the annual review falls during the school year). I probably would be hounding the district on a daily basis (squeaky wheel gets the grease) to find out what's going on with the eval. I personally would want the services in place for my child's first day in Kdg. Are you saying the team members that don't usually see your chid are the ones who will be doing the eval? That may not be a bad thing. Goodluck, Bonnie
Guest guest
Thanks for the advice. Actually I went to someone else that I know that works with the child study team. This was on Wednesday morning and now the ball is finally rolling. I became the squeaky wheel and now they are getting it done.
