The New Jersey Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs'

(NJOSEP) self-

assessment/monitoring process focuses on improving educational results and

functional outcomes for students

with disabilities and ensuring compliance with those special education

requirements related to positive student

outcomes. All school districts in New Jersey will be involved in the

self-assessment/monitoring process, at

least once, over the next five years.

NJOSEP and the Statewide Parent Advocacy Network (SPAN) are co-sponsoring

two informational sessions

for parents regarding the self-assessment/monitoring process. These

sessions will provide an overview of the

process, including:

.. discussion of the federal special education monitoring priorities;

.. the relationship between New Jersey's monitoring process and the federally

required State

Performance Plan;

.. selection of districts to participate in the self-assessment/monitoring

process;

.. reporting monitoring results to the public; and

.. parents involvement in the self-assessment/monitoring process including

parent representation on the

steering committee; parent attendance at the public meeting; and completion

of a parent survey.

A teleconference will be offered twice on Tuesday, December 2, 2008. If you

would like to participate in

the teleconference, please fill out the attached registration form and

return same via fax to Kathy Duffy at

(856) 582-4323. Please be sure to indicate on the registration form your

choice of training times. The first

training will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The second training will

be held from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30
