Guest guest
Hi Bernice! Just months ago you posted that the SLP is positive your child has apraxia. What makes this neurologist believe your child is autistic? What signs of autism does your child have? And being I have a 14 YO son diagnosed many times as ADHD when he was younger (but school age) I know that they won't -or I was told 'they' meaning medical doctors won't diagnose ADHD until school age (looking at it affecting school or social aspects) I know they can say 'suspected' ADHD for preschool -but 3 YO?!!! How do I put this?....can you ask here for a recommendation for a second opinion from a traditional neuromedical doctor? Where do you live -what state or country? Oooooh and why are you asking about diet? My advice is don't spill milk that you shouldn't cry over. This whole milk thing holds no water if you check the archives and if you want another crazy expression - just say no to untested drugs and diets for kids. Keep your child as normal as possible. What I mean is keep it simple for the sake of you and your child because more isn't always better. In fact if the more makes your child different -or puts your child on an unproven medication -or takes away monies that could be going to " normal " fun activities for your child -less is more. If you have to go all crazy extreme do it then -when you 'have' to. Did you read The Late Talker? If not that would probably be a good start. =====
Guest guest
In defense of the diets they are tested. , there are books on these diets that predate the birth of your children. There are mainstream doctors who have supervised these interventions for 25 years. There are tests and resources to be found to know what does and does not apply to your kid so you do not fall into untested waters. As for the initial post, yes there is hope and for all that I disagree with 's post, at that young age with so much in question I agree a second opinion is warranted by a good neurodevelopmental pediatrician. If you are going to look at diet my best advice would be to find a metabolic neuro but also read the books to see what applies. Some books : Is this your child? Guest guest
Liz...) (sigh) I know that for specific conditions diets are tested as I grew up on one since I was diagnosed with celiac. Until put on that diet I spent much of my preschool years living in hospitals. What I am referring to are the " milk somehow makes your child autistic or apraxic " posts and the " oh your chidl isn't talking yet, try the GFCF diet " posts. In regards to the two messages above - neither are tested for apraxia. (I can say since just about no research has been done on apraxia!) And in regards to tested I've posted many times that when we all met in person which is to me the best way to know how well these things work or don't work- and more didn't mean better -as we have in The Late Talker book we found those that had their kids in appropriate speech therapy with the right formula of oils by far had the greatest success. (and yes even back then some tried autism methods for apraxia) (and Jen if your child is allergic to milk that's different) If some of you want to concentrate on autism methods for apraxia that's your choice -but this group shouldn't move away from proven methods for apraxia -like therapy -therapy toys (thanks Rita!!) Here's just one new member that is asking for more about apraxia even though her child has autism as well. Goodness knows one can find autism info all over -not the same to be said about apraxia. This is one of the few places to learn more about that. If anyone wants to help this parent just copy and paste this message below and answer here -she's a member of this group. " Hi, . I hope you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving. I'm emailing you to mainly seek just a boost, I guess, because I am in the beginning stages of my " fight " for services for _____. At his 3-yr check up 2 weeks ago, verbal apraxia was confirmed along with sensory issues and mild autism. Yes, I was prepared for all three, but the autism i wasn't sure about until the appointment. It's kind of thrown me for a loop. I am trying to get things going within my school district, but I fear that they are going to try to focus mainly on the autism, and I would like to focus on speech. I'm already frustrated with it and it hasn't even started. I know that I am being impatient, but ____ and his difficulties are on my mind 24/7 -- and I realize that this isn't the case for anyone else, especially those shuffling the paperwork and doing it for however many kids. I just know I'm going to have to get that mamma bear mindset going (again). I am armed with your book and all of it's wonderful and so important support, so I guess I'm ready to battle for ____. I think that I may be in a bit of a unique situation since I homeschool and plan to homeschool ____, too. I can't imagine turning him over to strangers who don't know his quirks and triggers, etc. I wonder if that will work against us? I also notice the board has turned autistic - mainly postings about autism. I'm still relatively new there, but I was just wondering if that's something new or something that comes around now and then. I DO want to learn more about autism, but I also want to keep up to date on apraxia. It's clear there are a LOT of kids with both autism and apraxia, more than I even realized, but they are two separate issues, aren't they? Thanks for your time. Happy Holidays _________ =====
Guest guest
I did not say any of the offending things you mention. I also never implied the diets were tested for apraxia. What they were and are used for are mito conditions, both dysfunction (which is easy to miss as most of the kids can appear fine) or disorder (less easy to miss but still missed in this day and age where HMOs control the purse strings). I did not say try a diet. I said consider goinf to a dr. to see what is up. Since no research has been done trying something is the only path many of us have. Also, you continuously point to apraxia, time tested, this board yet no polls are done with specificity and comparing older children to younger on this board is apples and oranges. " The young ones are getting more vaccines, more often and with more aluminum. That alone changes a lot. I am not saying to go on a diet. I am saying, since the original poster asked, that there are ways, tested ones, to see if that is warranted. I would not dare say more than that on this board at this point for the reactions that would follow. As for this: " milk somehow makes your child autistic or apraxic " I don't recall anyone saying that. What I do recall are many resources listed on milk allergy, etc.
