Basic Rights in Special Education

An introduction to the rights and responsibilities of parents of children

with special needs under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

(IDEA) 2004, the State Special Education Code 2006, and Section 504 of the

Vocational Rehabilitation Act.

Basic Rights in Transition

This workshop discusses issues relating to transitioning from school to

adult life, identifying outcomes and developing goals as part of the IEP

process. Parents and young adults will become knowledgeable regarding

resources in the community in order to build linkages, and ensure a

dignified life as a contributing citizen.

Essential Components of the IEP

This interactive workshop provides participants with a review of the

essential components of an Individualized Education Plan. As a result of

this workshop, participants will be able to read and understand an IEP

document, be able to effectively participate in IEP meetings and know how to

address IEP concerns/issues in a proactive and positive way.

Health Advocacy - Accessing Health Coverage and Services For Children with

Special Health Care Needs

This workshop focuses on accessing health coverage and services for children

with special health care needs. Topics covered include an introduction to

the various health insurance models, who is eligible and how to apply;

mental health services and the child behavioral health system; advocacy in

the managed care environment; health support services; consumer laws-COBRA,

HIPAA, ERISA, FMLA; and adult systems of care.
