Guest guest
Lock a child in their room?? In some states thats considered child abuse. As for keeping the child up till 2:30 and waking her up at 5:45 is the dr crazy?? Im thinking who in their right mind wants to deal with a 4 yr old whos slept 3hrs?? Guest guest
My friend was actually written up by Children and Youth Services for turning the door knobs around and locking the door. It is endangering the welfare of a child because they can't let themselves out in an emergency. That Dr sounds like a complete freak. I have always learned to trust my gut. If that doesn't sound right to you then don't do it. No one knows your child like you do and dont forget, Drs are people. Some are better than others. They are not gods. Use your gut and common sense. I had a special ed IU teacher tell me to punish my child when he gagged and spit out food because of the texture (oral- sensory issues associated with AS). I called her supervisor and had her reported. I have the advantage of being an OT and knowing that that advise was very bad. It taught me to always filter info through my own system to see if I wanted to use some, any or all of it. Hope that helps, Debbie
Guest guest
would locking her in her room be traumatizing for her??? I wouldn't do that. *smile* You can answer this best yourself. pretend you are her at her age, (4 years old) you have a disability and know nothing about it. now you can't sleep and someone locks you in the room. hummm. I would find another doctor ASAP. My son doesn't sleep through the night either. I would never lock him in his room. Maybe if you tried to let her sleep in a sleeping bag in your room next to you. support her, tell her everything is OK, maybe if you read her a bed time story just before she goes to bed. try everything, but what that doctor said. I don't know about keeping her up to 230am without any naps, is a good idea either. How active is she during the day? does she have a mommy & me group to go to? Maybe play time at the YMCA, a preschool? something for her to do during the day. but this is just my opinion, from another mom. hugs. Guest guest
I second Helen's opinion. I wouldn't do this with an NT child, no matter how difficult the situation. It's all about setting the structure that will help them succeed. That might take some trial and error. But locking her in her room would never enter the picture in my mind. Guest guest
I totally agree with the other responses. I don't think this is a good idea. Not only does the body need some physical rest, but the main reason for sleep is to quiet the mind. And, if anyone needs quiet mind time, it is our Aspies!!! We used to have problems with bedtime with my now 24-yr old Aspie. There were be nights (depending upon what happened within hours before bed) that he would stay up all night. The thing that would work for us were these things: 1. A structure routine for bedtime. Always the same time (as close as possible) and the same routine each time. 2. Within a couple of hours before bed we would focus on my son. This was his time. A reason why he didn't want to go to bed was because he felt like we were leaving him. He felt that he wasn't getting enough attention before bed and then we were abondoning him in his room. So for a couple of hours each night before his bedtime, it was all about him. 3. The activities within those couple of hours would be quiet soothing activities. Reading stories, talking about stuff, playing with quiet toys - together. 4. No food for a couple of hours before bed. No " nighttime " snack. Sometimes the food would get him " wrapped around the axle " (as we would call it!). the only thing we would give him was chamomile tea (cooled down) or some warm milk, or something that would help him sleep. I am not sure of the properties of melotonin. It does help a person to sleep, but I am not sure how safe and in what dosages to give to small children. 5. Then, if needed, within those couple of hours, we would have a warm quiet bath. 6. Once we got him into bed, then a bit of time (sometimes it would be more than others - but never make it more than a small bit of time) we would sit quietly on his bed, rub his back and talk gently to him. Reassuring him that when he woke up from his wonderful nighttime sleep, we would be right there, but he had to wait until the sun came up. This process took a bit of time, but eventually a routine was established and it really helped. As we all know, consistency is the key and once it is established, it helps things go so much smoother. Hang on......you will get there. it is hard, especially with something like this. At the end of the day, we are all so tired and the last thing anyone of us ever needs is another struggle. good luck..... Guest guest
>I have never heard of anything like this and I personally do not agree with it. My 5 yr old also has problems going to sleep at night. I give him a warm bath and a snack (nothing sweet) then we brush teeth and I lay down with him. Then we start making up stories. He may start it. Then I add to it and most times it becomes quite silly. Eventually he gets still enough that he will drop off to sleep. I would never lock my child in a room. I feel like this would cause so much fear that you could create more problems. I am shocked someone would recommend this. If a child does not get but 3 to 4 hours of sleep a night the body will be run down and susceptable to any virus/cold that may be going around at school. Good luck and I wish you the best. > I took my 4 yr old daughter to see Dr. Childers tuesday..she was recently diagnosed with autistic spectrum disorder, aspergers, and developmental delays...Well she has always had trouble sleeping so he told us to keep her awake everyday until 230 am and about 15 minutes before 230 am give her a warm bath, warm milk, and 1 meletonin talblet and put her in the bed at 3am....then wake her up at her regular time for school which is 545 am...no naps all day......he told us if she cries to turn her lock around on her door and lock her in her room..does this seem cruel or is it just me...i just dont see how we can function off 3 or 4 hours of sleep a day... > > --------------------------------- > Have a burning question? Guest guest
this is just my experience... my 3 yr old has been taken melatonin for a while now. its helpful and doesnt hurt him in any way. he takes an over the counter brand called melinex. he takes 1.5 tablets half hour before bed. this is the dose our developmental ped gave me for my 28lb kiddo. also theres a website called native remedy..google it and its the first link.. and they have homeopathicsleep remedys for young children. i personally have had no experience with them, but several of my friends use it and swear by them. I ordered the autism treatment from the copany last night.... ill let you know.. heather Cat <sushicat69@...> wrote: Also...I would not give melatonin to a four-year-old without some proof of its efficacy and safety. If not then I would just try that first and see how that works? Do you have a schedule that you try to stick with at bedtime? If not, try that. Who wants to stay up until 3 am!?! Guest guest
thank u he sounded like a crazy man and it just didnt seem normal so im glad i asked thank u U have helped me alot debramelamed <melamedj@...> wrote: My friend was actually written up by Children and Youth Services for turning the door knobs around and locking the door. Hope that helps, Debbie --------------------------------- We won't tell. Guest guest
I also wanted to mention that I do think that the warm bath before bed is a good idea as well as the melatonin! I take it and also give it to Ezra (5yrs old). It is all natural and is acually something that your brain already creates! My sons neurologist recommended it. We give it at least a 1/2 hr before bed. Before that he would be up till 10 or later!!! Good Luck!!
