Guest guest
Hi, I am curious if there is a standard for how many words an apraxic child might learn over a few months time. I have been keeping up with my 3 1/2 year olds words for the past 4-5 months and I noticed that he has only 1 new " true " word and 7 new approximations. I guess I am just curious to know if this is good progress or what. I know that each kid will learn in their own time, but is there something to go by that shows what good progress might be? I suppose any progress is good progress, but still.... I am curious
Guest guest
My now 5 1/2yo ds learned " k " and " g " fairly quickly when the targeted sound was at the beginning of a word but it took him longer to get it at the end of a word. It took him about 6 mos to get the " y " sound. In the meantime he was approximating more and using his PECS cards more. It also took him a year of oral-motor therapy to be able to move his tongue from side to side. He has hypotonia in his tongue. After 3 years of therapy he still cannot move his tongue up but you can see the muscles in his tongue now and his tongue used to just flop out when you asked him to stick out his tongue. Progress is coming faster as my son gets older. Is it maturity? He is getting older and more motivated to try harder to be understood? Just that 3 years of ST will have a lot to show for the effort involved? Best wishes to you on your speech therapy journey! > > Hi, I am curious if there is a standard for how many words an apraxic > child might learn over a few months time. > > I have been keeping up with my 3 1/2 year olds words for the past 4-5 > months and I noticed that he has only 1 new " true " word and 7 new > approximations. > > I guess I am just curious to know if this is good progress or what.
