I told him to go put elmo to bed. He put elmo to bed, closed the blinds in his room, put his finger over his lips and said SSH and walked around the room sshing over his fingers like his teacher does at school. What a remarkable moment. This is after he picked up the phone and said hello - sounded like it. Today with biomedical therapy in addition to PROMPT ST, OT, Charlie is a normal 4 year old boy with a slight lisp on the letter s. It does sound like you child has apraxia. Some have autism and apraxia and some simply apraxia. Although Charlie's formal diagnosis is Apraxia, I treated him like he was autistic biomedical wise and have had nothing but success. I reccommend the book Healing the new childhood epidemics - 4 A disorder. Colleen Mother of Charlie 4 years [ ] question about Apraxia I understand that Apraxia varies in severity. I am in the process of having my child evaluated by a developmental pediatrician. In order to prepare for it, I have noted some of the words my son is saying that I can understand. Here are some examples: dee-da = grandpa dee-dee = daddy mare-mare = mary nil or mil = milk bow = book da-dee = barney tyus = thomas kaya-tuck = fire truck poo poo = people He is 3 years & 4 mo. old and can say about 25 words that I can understand. Does this sound like Apraxia? or does he just have a severe speech delay? He can't blow bubbles or pucker his lips but he doesn't seem to have any of the other symptoms that accompany apraxia. Guest guest
Because of what you are saying about the lips you may want to check if he has dysarthia (low muscle tone of the face).?? My son had this problem and until he started having oral function (or oral motor) therapy he had very limited words and very few consonant sounds.????? Once I had a therapist working with him on this and I do daily exercises at home we saw huge strides.??? Your son is trying to communicate which is great.?? I think it is also very promising that he seems to make some of the harder sounds like " c " and " t " ? and more than one sound together. Da Dee (vs. Da Da). Guest guest
Has he veen evaluated by a Speech Therapist in your school district? Results from the therapist would be information that the Dev Ped would want to see. The Dev Ped is not a speech therapist! Have that list available--the school district would want to know what/how he is saying. All Eval's are free and he may qualify for speech therapy thru your school in a half-day or full-day program. > > I am in the process of having my child evaluated by a developmental pediatrician. >> He is 3 years & 4 mo. old and can say about 25 words that I can understand. Guest guest
When our oldest son was 3 he spoke very poorly. We were concerned but I hadn't heard of apraxia or any of that so we figured it was just a matter of being a slow talker. He was our first child. But at age 4 he took off and has never stopped since. He now speaks 4 languages and has graduate degrees! He's 30. > > I understand that Apraxia varies in severity. I am in the process of having my child evaluated by a developmental pediatrician.
