Re: Stopping fish oil with no regression?

We stopped the fish oil for a week and saw no real regression in speech, just

maybe a little more jargon usage " yay-kit " for any word she couldn't say--like

before we did the B12 shots and the PRO EFA EPA  +E, when we were just using

regular fish oil which clearly didn't have the same effect., She was also

attempting less words, but the rest was about the same, so it wasn't a huge

difference in just one week.  Now the question is what happens after 10 days, a

month, 6 months---the current speech may be maintained but maybe progress to the

next level may not take place as easily.  it can be very complicated and

difficult to assess.

It is clear that if a child responds to the fish oil with speech surges there is

a deficiency.  What happens when you stop providing the supplement is a question

that may hold a different answer for each child.

We stopped the fish oils temporarily for some tests.  But were happy to resume

as they are what she needs to continue to progress. in our daughter's case we

have documented proof that she was malabsorbing the fish oil + many MANY other

vital brain nutrients even though I had been giving her the fish oil since

birth, but not the right combination it seems--and she truly has autoimmune

issues (skin) and again, documented deficiencies that indicate severe

malabsorptions. So for us stopping it is not an option.  Why did you stop it if

he responded so well?  You mention SPEAK and I know there's a lot of dispute

around this but you can always go back to the regular fish oil and less E.

You see this is a vital nutrient for the brain even for neurotypical kids, and

adults, and the elderly, and everyone, so why stop it when our kids need optimal

neurological functioning no matter how you look at it and particularly so if

they are good responders to it?

I also do not think all kids with apraxia are alike or lack the same nutrients

exactly. Some may not need the E and need something else to ensure the fatty

acids get processed at cellular level, some may need more or only a little,

others may need the carnitine too, or the situation might change as their

metabolic rate is not static and can be influenced by a variety of

factors--viral, bacterial, toxic chemicals encountered --including drugs--and

foods or agents  that create an inflammatory response. So things vary for each

child but also in the same child across time.  Some vitamins do get stored up in

the fat and maybe are no longer needed after a while or are needed in less

quantities. They should always be tested for, all the fatty ones the ADEK--so

periodically you know where you stand and what to cut back on or leave or even

increase. It's very complex and I really think it should all be done under the

supervision of a doctor who uses supplements

and nutrition to treat his/her young patients or vital signs of deficiency or

overload may be missed. Regular doctors just don't know this it's not part of

their training nor part of their recommended guidelines etc.

Anyway, i understand stopping any supplement for a while is no big deal, but if

it is needed by the body/brain to function properly you need to know the signs

and the facts so see what others tell you and also see a doctor who knows these

things if you aren't seeing one already.  The long term consequences are really

hard to predict so unless you have a real good reason for stopping, you may want

to talk to a medical professional who can explain better what to watch out for.

All the best,

Elena

Subject: [ ] Stopping fish oil with no regression?

Date: Friday, November 28, 2008, 11:10 PM

I posted about my son drooling and sensory issues flaring, and I

decided to stop fish oils and slowly restart until I figure out where

the problem is. His last dosage was Monday, and I'm now seeing better

focus, less input seeking, less drooling (still there occasionally).

The real test will be when he has his session on Tues. I was expecting

a huge regression, and I haven't seen it. I'm hearing a few of his

words/sentences a little more shortened or slurred, he's not quite

rounding his lips for his oo/ oh sounds, but with a quick prompt he

will do everything right, but otherwise the difference isn't incredibly

noticable.

Now I wonder... His first sentence came a few days after starting

Speak, and I've seen nothing but progress since then. Obviously, the

therapy (3x/ week) has never stopped, so I'm not sure whether the word

explosion was the fish oil or if everything 'clicked' one day, or a

combo of both. If the posts I've read say that regression takes place

in 2-3 days and it's been this mild, what are the chances it'll get

much worse?

My son's sensory issues got alot worse when we started the fish oil.

It's only 2 years later that I figured out it was yeast. I don't

know if it was just a coincidence that the yeast got bad at the same

time.

Has your son had an OAT test? Are you seeing a DAN!? Have you tried

Cod liver oil instead?

There are tests to see what oils the kids are deficient in. It may be

a good idea so as not to overload the liver with excess. My kids need

CLO more than any other oil it seems here. Very consistent with

family history and we do live in the Northeast where tere is less sun

exposure. Unrefined organic coconut oil pulls stuff out of the liver

so that may help.

Fish oil pulls the bad stuff out of the brain but may need some extra

help getting it out. That, I am told, is the function of vitamins C

and E. Also, if a need for high dose oils E may be oxidized so some

need it due to that. Plus, since E is fat soluble and the brain is

fat it may stay in the brain to help with excess inflammation. Caused

by what and how safe to give how much for how long and what type of

E...those are the answers we hope to see some day.

Since I have a boy I am concerned about the E studies that someone

posted recently related to prostate and diabetes. I would like to

know the type of E used and form of selenium as well as the age group

involved, number of subjects, etc.

We try for E in diet via olive oil, sunflower seeds and almonds but

have to watch for allergy stuff.
