Guest guest
Thank you for posting about the white spots in nails and low zinc. Roxanne. We're waiting to see the results from the blood work run by the allergist Dr. recommended. So far the skin tests were a bust as she obviously has some intolerance given her reactions to gluten/casein and also her scalp psoriasis and eczema--but it must be delayed, affecting her scalp and diaper area primarily though before th e diet it used to be arms, calves and ch. So we're in the process of following that up too but I'm not very hopeful. These tests can sometimes rule things out, but there are so many other possibilities we don't have a test for yet. This is why going to an open minded and experienced doctor who treats biomedically is critical, My question to you is since you mention white spots on nails (her dad has that and is intolernat to several main things.), but what my daughter has are lighter --or discolored irregular shape patches on but/thigh, back even neck. Some go away over time, others not I seem to remember reading that such lighter patches can be associated with a certain genetic disorder, but at the time I read it it didn't sound like my daughter and I dismissed it. But now it has come back and no, the patches are no old wounds that have become de-pigmented, I would know that and she has many rashes that never develop such a white spot so it is definitely not a scar but an internal manifestation of some sort. Thank you all for any ideas. Elena. Anyway, just wondering if any of you may have some ideas. Elena From: rxflwrs <rxflwrs@...> Subject: RE: [ ] Re: Piracetam - OK got curious -some stuff I found out about it Date: Friday, November 28, 2008, 12:55 AM I wonder how many Moms have had their child tested for low zinc? went to an allergist as she had contact dermatitis when eating ranch dressing and also seemed to have a lot of sinus infections. Tests came back that she had low IgG subclass 2 and 4 and low IgA..and a high sensitivity to dustmites.well I jumped on the internet and panicked that she may have ataxia telangiectasia as she does have some other issues that go with this ..well to make a long story short the neurologist in Miami Childrens Hosp said no she does not have that but her other issues warrant follow up with an immunologist. which led us to checking her zinc levels.. we are awaiting the results and I will get back within the next week with the results.. The allergist said go ahead and supplement and in 2 days the sore she had in her mouth was gone and she is feeling so much better without the usual fatigue..The only thing he said is to balance the zinc with 2 mg of copper which we are doing. Roxanne PS white spots on finger nails can be signs of zinc deficiency ------------------------------------
Guest guest
Elena, Sorry don't know about the skin discolorations but do remember neurologists checked for them as I guess they can mean something..She does get patches of lighter skin from the sun during the summer but only on uncovered areas.. her skin is naturally brown as she is from El Salvador. Approx the last 6 months she has acquired strange light pink wide line areas on one hip area that maybe stretch marks that low zinc can cause. Are you giving your daughter the Omega oils. The allergist said omegas and primrose oil helps with eczema.Dry scalp can be a symptom of low zinc also so many things that over lap..not easy putting all this together. Did you google patches of light colored areas on skin? Maybe another Mom can also give some insight. Roxanne
Guest guest
Some of our kids malabsorb calcium and this skin stuff is the result. I better healed gut would yield less of it as you are seeing no? There is a consition like what you describe. I think it is genetic and autoimmune based. I believe it is the one has. My old boss has it. Still, some genetic things are environmental so I would not think it irreversible even if you read that. My daughter had a viral thing twice that had spots surface like these (no pox or wounds firts but the spots were a pale pink and they were flat). It did not look like they'd leave but ultimately they did.
Guest guest
Hi Roxanne, Yes, she's on the fish oil and a lot of other things as recommended by her biomedically trained pediatrician. And she has beyond dry scalp, she has scales, thick, slivery and even yellowish scales on her scalp that started when wheat and dairy were introduced after 1 year of age--around that time --her eczemas started then too. I always keep forgetting to ask about these spots when we go for the 3 times a year or so visits to her biomed doctor. There's so much to go over all the tests and all the new things that these faint spots on her skin always slip my mind but I've noticed them for over a year now and yes, they do come and go, but hang around for many months. I also think she even had some yellow spots that were a little raised from the skin, also on her back and neck and those went away before I could ask the doctor what they could mean. on those if I had my guess something with the liver, just from how they looked and I know brownish spots can mean liver issues sometimes, but again, they weren't visible at the time of the last consultation, because those I would have asked about, I was concerned. These lighter ones I always forget about even though i make a list days in advance to be sure I cover everything I need to go over with her. i guess I should start my list now for the Spring. But you know how it is, no doctor can know it all. I learned more about the fish oils from this group than from the doctor, she was just recommending the fish oil and the black currant oil and now we're taking a refined coconut oil that's supposed to help with the yeast... I've heard of developmental pediatricians and neurologists sometimes checking for genetic condition that manifests with light patches and they do it under blue light. i don't even want to remember the so called consultation we had with the neurologists. he just talked to me for 1.5 h and when he finally decided to see the patient who was going out of her mind jumping on his couch scribbling all over etc.--he also had NO TOYS!! a pediatric neurologist without any toys in his office, can you believe it??!!!---anyway, he then tried to check her reflexes but she wouldn't let him near by that time, was crying and kicking was getting bored out of her skull ---and that was the extent of my neurological visit for Ziana. Such a waste! I'm sure other neurologists are good, the ones who actually examine the patient--even if the patient is a child i'm sure there are ways to do it right, what are they a children's doctor for, especially a neurologist where things are not immediately apparent like when you've got a cough and a chest cold. And i'm sure some neurologists read the written material from parents in advance so they don't spend the whole time asking questions but verifying what they already think it might be based on the parental info they collect in advance. Such a waste that was and I did offer to give all the info I had written and past reports to him but he did not take them, only takes the info at the time of visit...Hughh!!! Anyway, so I do know they can mean something, but quite frankly at this point I no longer trust the doctors to know stuff like this because obviously not all of them do and you don't know what you're getting. All of Ziana's diagnoses and deficiencies until we saw the biomedical doctor were identified by ME--the mom, not the pediatrician, not the SLP even, --takes a lot more professionals to figure stuff like this out. That's why this list ids so valuable because we can all learn from each other so much and have the benefit of knowing things that pertain to our child's condition from moms who go to specialists and professionals we cannot necessarily go to. Anyway, thank you for your suggestions,. I will google it and see what others have to say. Her patches also seem to be where the sun doesn't normally shine--butt, back, neck---I wonder what that means? I would actually expect them to be in the sun seen areas if they were in any way an environmental thing, but the fact that they are not means there are internal factors contributing to them and it doesn't seem to be a fungus or anything like that either--I've had those and they're very different, or the Ptiriasis which is a skin disease caused by a parasite. that's the closest it looks like but with that you get many of them and they spread, not just a few here and there..... Will keep looking and i'll ad it to the pediatrician list, but just my luck, she'll have none by then and then they'll come back All the best, Elena From: rxflwrs <rxflwrs@...> Subject: RE: [ ] white spots... Guest guest
Thanks Liz. The calcium may be an issue, I'll look into that. She doesn't have a lot of them, never more than 2 or 3 and in areas where the sun doesn't shine usually, like her butt, her back, her neck... will see what i can come up with and how to see about the calcium deficiency. All the best, Elena
