Guest guest
My first step would be to ask who made the diagnosis? I would take the child to a behavioral/developmental pediatrician along with the report of diagnosis re Apraxia and get the developmental pediatrician to write a script indicating that this type of speech therapist with these qualifications is MEDICALLY NECESSARY. Then you will be ready for your meeting with the special ed. director of the school to make this request. You do not mention if your child's school is public or private, but regardless if it is private the public school system is still responsible under child find to locate these children and provide services if they live within their district In a message dated 6/17/2009 9:07:35 A.M. Guest guest
I am probably one of the biggest supporters of Prompt here. It worked fabulously for my child, BUT it is not the only method out there that works for apraxia. Have you found any SLP who specializes in oral motor? Have you looked for one that has used Kaufmann? I'm not too well versed in other methods because I didn't have to go searching for them, but others here are. If you can't find an SLP who has experience with apraxia then I'd push to get someone trained. Otherwise you might have great success with another method. Prompt was a no brainer for me once I realized I lived 1 mile from the Prompt Institute. After we moved I was lucky enough to be just under an hour from a level 3 certified Prompt trainer recommended personally by Deb. Not everyone is this lucky, and not every child needs Prompt to improve. Good luck! Guest guest
I am not familiar with this method and asked my therapist about it.???? My therapist isn't trained in it but she has been doing something where she puts a picture on a card, along with a word, and this she pairs with a gesture.??? Her goal is to teach him all of his sounds using this method.??? Then when he doesn't say a word correctly she can lay out all of the cards, or do the guestures to show where he is making a mispronunciation.???? After 10 mos of other therapy, this seems to click with him.?? He had 3 letters before and now have 13 down pat.????? I practice them with him and he loves doing it.??? He doesn't need the cards anymore and when he sees the letters in?a book he smiles proudly, makes the guesture and says the sound all on his own.??? All this in about?8 weeks since we started this. Example: An index card would have the letter T printed on it and a picture of a persons wrist with a watch on it.???? The guesture is tapping an index finger on your wrist while says " T - T- T " ? (tuh, the sound of T, not Tee) If you want to try it feel free to email me and I can send you? list of the ones he has done.?? Honestly you could make up your own as its nothing official.??
