AM Sessions

11:00-12:15

Session A: Dr. Larry Silver-Organizational Problems: Are They the

Result of ADHD, Learning Disabilities, or Both?

A child, adolescent, or adult might have problems with organization and

executive

function. Some literature suggests that these problems are part of Attention

Deficit

Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and that medication should be considered.

Other references

describe these problems as reflective of learning disabilities (LD). Special

education tutors or

ADHD organization coaches are considered the best intervention. Dr. Silver

will discuss all of

the ways that organization and executive function problems might be found.

He will then

explore the question of ADHD or LD and discuss the types of interventions

most likely to be

successful for these types of problems.

Session B: Dr. Beverly Barkon-Universal Design for Learning

Dr. Barkon will discuss Universal Design for Learning (UDL), one means to

ensure that all

students, with and without disabilities, have full access to the general

education

curriculum. The intent of UDL is to consider the learning needs of all

students initially when

selecting instructional materials and activities. Rather than retrofitting

after a lesson is

designed, the UDL approach is proactive in anticipating the individual needs

of diverse

learners across the curriculum. This workshop will address the elements of

UDL and

successful planning for meeting the needs of students with and without

disabilities in the

general education classroom.

Session C: Mr. Ira Fingles, ESQ -Accommodations in High Stakes Testing

Mr. Fingles will discuss how the changes in federal and state laws that are

meant to ensure

greater accountability on the part of school districts have prompted the

educational system to

become reliant upon statewide assessments (such as the HSPA in New Jersey)

as a measure of

schools' success. In addition, colleges and other post-secondary educational

institutions

continue to place great emphasis upon students' performance on the SAT and

other

standardized testing. The format of these tests often present great

challenges for students with

learning disabilities. This workshop will explore students' rights to

securing accommodations

to help ensure that students with learning disabilities are able to compete

on a level playing

field with their non-disabled classmates, along with strategies to ensure

that such

accommodations are granted and utilized to their fullest extent.

Session D: Dr. Beverly Barkon-Universal Design for Learning

Dr. Barkon will discuss Universal Design for Learning (UDL), one means to

ensure that all

students, with and without disabilities, have full access to the general

education

curriculum. The intent of UDL is to consider the learning needs of all

students initially when

selecting instructional materials and activities. Rather than retrofitting

after a lesson is

designed, the UDL approach is proactive in anticipating the individual needs

of diverse

learners across the curriculum. This workshop will address the elements of

UDL and

successful planning for meeting the needs of students with and without

disabilities in the

general education classroom.

Session F: Mr. Ira Fingles, ESQ -Transition from School to Adult Life

Since 1990, the special education laws have required that students' IEPs

include detailed plans

for ensuring that students are prepared for success after graduation in

postsecondary education,

employment, and independent living. By and large, students with learning

disabilities have

been excluded from this critical stage of educational planning. In this

workshop, participants

will gain an understanding of the true breadth and depth of the transition

planning process as it

applies to all students with disabilities, with a particular focus on

strategies to provide students

with learning disabilities with the best opportunities to experience

success, independence, and

self-sufficiency after graduation.

Session E: Barbara DeLoretto-Ready or Not...Here I Come: Successfully

Including StudentsWith Autism Into the Elementary General Education Setting

With the ever-growing numbers of students with autism, more and more general

educators will be

faced with the challenges of meeting the needs of these students in their

classrooms. This workshop

will discuss strategies necessary to successfully include students with

autism into general

education classrooms at the elementary school level. Topics will include:

understanding the

unique learning needs of students with autism, identifying necessary

prerequisite skills for

successful inclusion, curricular adaptations and modifications,

socialization, and the importance

of typical peer involvement and behavior management.
