When my son was non verbal, we didn't sign language with Signing Times DVD 3

volumes. Then, I started using PECS system with his private therapist. Another

thing, I think that help alot is turning the caption on the TV since he like to

read, he can read what they are saying (I got TV caption from our Hyperlexia

group) which has helped alot. My son will be 6 on Oct. 29th and most of time he

only use 2 to 3 words to asked for he wants every now and then 5 words.

Best of Luck, I hope it helps

Tracey

I am wondering if there are many in this group whose kids are completely

non-verbal. Our son is 11 and has no words. I would especially be interested in

knowing what types of therapy you are doing with your child.

Thank you,

My son just turned six and he has words that he uses sometimes hard to

understand, receptively he is way ahead, expressively he is behind, is there

hope at any age that more words will come in? What causes a surge in

speech????

My son is 6 and only has a few words. He has Down Syndrome and Apraxia.

We are using a combination of things to communicate. Signs, PECS and an

augmentative device that they are now trialing in his school. He enjoys

watching the Signing Time video's but does not like to use too many

signs. The PECS he enjoys more. The electronic device he loves. They

can program it to say almost anything for him so he can participate in

class more. He also gets ST 3x, OT 2x and PT 1x week. I also go to a

private PROMPT therapist 1x week.

Hi ,

My son is only 3.5 yo, but is non-verbal, diagnosed with severe verbal and oral

apraxia (well he tries, but the best you get are some vowel sounds). We use

PECS, but I am really excited about some applications for iPhone and apple

iTouch. You can get the basic iTouch pretty inexpensive via ebay.

Since your son is 11.5 he might like it better than the large and very expensive

AAC devices out there.

check these out on iTunes

--proloquo2GO ---pricey, but looks fantastic!

--look2learn

--iconverse

--learn to talk

--icommunicate

I know this doesn't answer your question, but I thought it might be of some

interest to you!

Have either of you tried the EFAs????(fish oil)

It worked wonders for our adopted daughter..she was not speaking at

age 4 when we met her.

Good Luck to you both.

My son is 2.5 yrs old and I would like to try the fish oils, but what form do

you give a child that age...is there a liquid or pill or what? My husband and I

are willing to try anything at this point.

We were recommended Nordic Naturals ProEFA which comes in a capsule you can poke

a hole in and put in his food. I used to give me son a 1/2 teaspoon in his

pureed fruit. It comes in a couple of flavors - lemon, berry, orange?..increase

amount weekly depending on how he is handling it to a teaspoon.

Thank you to those who responded to my question regarding therapy that your

child is doing. We have tried MANY things and still have a non-verbal son! We

I recently started my 20month old non-verbal son on ProEFA (otherwise known as

Omega 3,6,9) by Nordic Naturals. This is a pharmaceutical grade supplement made

from the freshest fish oils, so it doesn't taste as fishy as some. Within 3

weeks, I have seen a difference. This particular product is for 5 year olds and

up. They are supposed to take two capsules a day. I consulted with my

pediatrician and he said to give my son 1 capsule a day. This particular

product has a lemon flavor. He doesn't mind taking it at all. I hope this

helps.

vitamin shoppe for just under $17.

This supplement is for 5year olds or older. They are supposed to take 2

capsules a day. I consulted with our pediatrician and he said it was safe to

give our son 1 capsule a day. It is lemon flavored, and he can chew it. My

older son doesn't like the taste, so I puncture the capsule and mix it in a

spoonful of apple sauce or yogurt. I haven't really had any trouble that way.

I hope this helps! I saw improvement in my non-verbal 20 month old within 3-4

weeks!

Hope this helps,

My son is 3.5 years old and I give him capsules of fish oil. I put a tack

through the capsules, squirt it into a cup and put it in juice. I give him a

ProEFA in the morning, and a ProEPA at noon and another ProEFA at night. At

first he was one one then we switched to 2 and now we are at 3 because he has

went from babbling to actually mouthing words without sound. The pills are both

1000mg. I think it is worth a try because it is healthy and something everybody

needs. Because my son doesn't consume fish, this is a way for him to get his

Omega fatty acids. I would start with Nordic Naturals ProEFA and see how that

does fpr a while. If he does well do a ProEPA also.

We started out with fish oil and vitamin E. We then started seeing a DAN!

doctor. We are currently using: fish oil, vitamin E, probiotics,

acetyl-l-carnitine, MB-12 shots, creatine, & candizyme (enzymes for yeast). All

of these have helped with speech.

I believe creatine helps build muscles - my son tested low for this. My DAN!

didn't suggest I supplement because she said people don't have a lot of success.

I tried anyway and got good results. It definitely helped his speech.

Can you please tell me how much carnitine you are giving to your son and how old

he is (lb)?

Do you give Acetyl-L-Carnitine?

Thank you,
