Guest guest
For the 2yr old- get the Nordic Naturals Gummies. They may not be what the others are w/ EFA and EPA but the bottom line is that its better than nothing Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerry [ ] Fish oils and toddlers. Tips? I love this group and how helpful you all are! Ok, my son has been taking Coromega fish oils for a couple of weeks. He loves them (the orange packet) and takes it very well. I have read through everything and know that most kids get more surges using Nordic Naturals ProEFA and PreEPA. I have those now and tried to give them to him by cutting top off and pouring in a spoon. What a mess and I wasted part of it. Is there an easier way to make sure he gets all of the oil instead of me, the floor and his t-shirt? I wonder if NN has any plans to make an easy to take formula like Coromega has for the kids. I have read you can mix it with juice, etc. but he is already having a couple of chocolate Nutriiveda almond milk in the morning and I like to give him the fish oils in the morning, since he seems to get better reports at school when I do (more calm and following directions better). In addition, I have a two year old (my kids are 366 days apart in age) who I can't get to take medication at all or even the Coromega, but would love tips for him too. He seems to be speech delayed too and ECI will be out very soon to check him out. I started him on NV as well as I figure it can't hurt. Guest guest
Fish oils are an area I consider myself to be somewhat of an expert. Especially when it comes to keeping your home free of any smells, fish oil mess, and getting it into a child. PLEASE don't try to cut the end of the capsule as of course that will both waste product and worse make a mess. Fish oil once in fabric takes 3 washes to get out of fibers -so if your child wipes his hands or mouth on your couch...not a good thing when company comes over a few weeks later and you have a couch that smells like rancid dead fish! Here is an archive with step by step instruction for oil therapy. I was really careful with the oils as I have a bionic nose and would not be able to stand a kitchen that stunk like fish! Make sure you use paper towel and not a dish cloth or sponge to wipe up the oils if they spill. Also here's a trick from my brother who is a captain and a maritime attorney- use lemon to clean up any smell as well. PS- use glass, ceramic, metal or disposable. DO NOT PUT FISH OIL IN PLASTIC SIPPY CUPS (you'll have stinky cups) oils bind to the plastic -so no reusable plastic. If you get on clothes -you probably need to wash at least 3 times to remove the fishy smell. Here's an archive of how we got the oils into Tanner back before he could swallow the capsules: My 5 year old apraxic son Tanner is a trooper and takes the ProEFA from a spoon every day. I hold his nose for him, but he doesn't mind the taste. We started the holding the nose thing when Tanner used to take the efalex, which is very fishy smelling and tasting, and it's kind of our ritual now. I rip only half of the protective waxy seal off the top of the ProEFA bottle, and put a pin in the part that is left. When it's time to give Tanner his ProEFA, I open the top of the bottle, pull out the pin, put a hole in the capsule, put back the pin, and squeeze the oil onto a spoon. I always had a paper towel handy and the moment after I gave him his fish oil I dabbed his mouth with the paper towel so that he wouldn't wipe the back of his hand on his mouth...and then on his clothes or worse the furniture. Here are some other things we used to have to do when Tanner took the efalex which he hated. (Efalex is fishier tasting and smelling) 1. We would put just put a drop of fish oil in the middle of the bread for a sandwich and cover with peanut butter, a drop in the middle of a pancake, a drop in the middle of a bowl of spaghetti, etc. if we put too much fish oil, Tanner would not eat the food. 2. Glenn and Tanner and Dakota would each hold a cup filled with a dash of juice. Tanner's juice was always " spiked " with efalex. Tanner is very competitive and would love a good race. " Ready set Go! " and Glenn would hold the cup to his mouth without drinking and then stop and have all three compare who drank the most. Of course, Tanner was winning! They would keep doing this until Tanner won (which meant he finished the efalex fish oil spiked juice) 3. I used to bribe Tanner with gummy bears that he could have after. Didn't work as good as the first two. But for a long time we did a combination of number one and number three. 4. Tanner's older brother started taking the fish oil, and Tanner wants to do what Dakota does. 5. As Tanner got older, at about four, we started calling the fish oil " yucky magic fish oil which helps you talk " and we really made a big deal about how yucky it was, and would " show off " to people how Tanner could take this yucky stuff and eat it right off the spoon. It worked for Tanner! It was lots of work, but well worth the results. If your child will not take ProEFA, maybe buy some efalex and try that. Compared to efalex, a sock would probably be a treat! Again, some EFAs are liked by some children-hated by others. With ProEFA - many kids from the Cherab group will just eat it from a spoon, or chew the capsule since borage oil is naturally sweet. I can say that ProEFA does not smell like some of the other EFAs we've used. After a year and a half of Tanner hiding behind the couch when it was time to take other fish oils, this was amazing even without all the great breakthroughs he's had! The improvements when on the right supplement and the regressions on the wrong one are pretty quick-within weeks in most cases-so again you can see for yourself-like most of us did already! http://www.cherabfoundation.org/2006/how-do-i-get-my-child-to-eat-fish-oil Now after reading all of the above do you understand why it boggles my mind why some of us have an even more difficult time with chocolate or vanilla powder?!!! I had to do write " how do I serve nutriiveda? " http://pursuitofresearch.org/faq.html#serve Go figure! =====
Guest guest
we got the nn 3 6 9 jr and told my son they are lemon candy. He gobbles it up and chews on the capsule. I'm about done with the container and will move him up to ProEFA and tell him they are bigger lemon candy. I always chase it with a gummy bear or juice to make sure that the capsule was swallowed. Guest guest
I have done the following with the fish oil: I have pricked the end with a pen and squirted it into the mouth. I have made a slit in the end with a knife, and then let her chew on it (which she does now). I pricked the hole in the end, used a medicine syringe with removable bulb off to squirt it into (making sure to cover the end with my finger). I hope that helps. With my daughter she likes to chew all of the liquid out of the capsule... she loves the taste! Now to make the NV go down better! She noticed it right away in her cereal this morning and was not happy about it... but I swear in the couple days she has had a little bit I have seen a difference! [ ] Fish oils and toddlers. Tips? Guest guest
Thank you so very much . This is very helpful. I will read the links. Since it's three pills, the ProEFA and ProEPA, can I mix all three in one spoon or one drink and give to him or do I have to do the two types of oil separately? Guest guest
my daughter had been taking nordic naturals for 2 years. We use a syringe and at first I would sit on her and force it then give her some water or white grape juice as a chaser. Now she just opens her mouth though and takes it nicely for me. It is a very very good product if it is used correctly. I do not agree with mixing it. Guest guest
I always mixed them- actually think it's best that way for some reason. For Dakota at one point he had dosage split twice a day because his AM teachers reported he was more focused then his PM teachers so the school psychologist (who's husband is a cardiologist so big into fish oils!!) actually requested I send fish oils to the school nurse to give to Dakota after lunch and anecdotally Dakota was more focused on the days he didn't forget to go to the nurse for his two extra fish oil capsules -(at that point he was already on EIGHT in the AM!!) for Tanner we always gave him his fish oils all at once. For Dakota we just dropped his fish oils slightly since nutriiveda -for Tanner we cut it in half. I don't recommend doing this right away -wait a few months or you will see regression. Within a few months however you won't notice regression- and I don't want to cut out fish oils but as I feel their bodies are utilizing the essential fats better I believe they won't need as much. It's my theory and so far it's working for both my boys. Dakota who has always been my absent minded brilliant child has become a beam of focus...in fact he went from drifting and forgetting work but still skimming by on Bs to even a few Cs (!! may not sound bad but Dakota's tested in the 99th percentile and he is brilliant -can easily be top of the class) to As and in fact just got two certificates one from science and one from world history because he improved so dramatically since being on nutriiveda. From a child that my husband and I had to ask over and over from Friday after school " Dakota do you have homework? " and him saying " no " until 10 PM Sunday night when he remembered to a child that will do his work without anyone asking -after school and even on a sunny Saturday afternoon....with nobody asking him. (OK some of you may not get how PROFOUND that is!) This is my older son who refused to eat nutriiveda until his 2 years younger brother Tanner started sprouting up in front of his eyes past him in height on nutriiveda- till this day I still think that is the only reason he started to agree to drink it twice a day (he's on 4 scoops a day too) Fish oils kept Dakota off meds but was not as profound as when we added to his fish oils- nutriiveda for focus, academics and grades. You all know about nutriiveda for apraxia and autism -but for ADHD nutriiveda has proven once again to be a gold standard. Dakota (finally) admitted it does help him with focus -and he now asks for it!! So much more mature and calm- and has conversations with me and Glenn now =eye contact and interest where prior he was just focused on his friends and games. As I posted that one time he took the time to sit with me and Glenn when we had 2 of our elderly relatives over to talk rather than playing with his friends...and even helped me clean up after. I have to get Dakota's as well as other ADHD children testimonies up here http://pursuitofresearch.org/testimonials.html As you can read from Teri's on that page -I don't know how but this stuff does work on academics in a powerful way. I mean all those that ask me " my child is having trouble reading what do you recommend? " Sure there are still the basic traditional educational strategies most being multisensory based...but for sure I count " give your child nutriiveda and be amazed " right up there. And more shocking as crazy as that sounds -it works. You know that expression " I wish I could bottle whatever it is " ??? Nutriiveda did just that! But don't want to take away from fish oils either- one is the essential fatty acids and one contains all the essential amino acids plus all the necessary nutrients from whole foods. All the foods and essentials we need to consume daily to stay healthy. =====
Guest guest
I just read Teri's testimony on the pursuit research page and what you wrote below. How can nutravida help school work that much? I'm not doubting it, but it does seem too good to be true. Kate > > I always mixed them- actually think it's best that way for some reason.
