My son is 3 1/2 and has mild apraxia and has recently began stuttering extremely

bad on most days, sometimes it is not so bad.  It is very discouraging since he

had made so much progress in gaining words and putting them together over the

last year and is still only 50 % intelligible to other people.  But, now with

the stuttering it is making him a lot harder to understand, especially other

people.  I would appreciate any advice anyone may have on their experiences with

their child if they stutter and any resources anyone may know of that may help

him!!!! Please, I am thankful for the progress he has made but feel now that we

are going backwards again.

Thanks so  much!

I feel this is definitely the case with my son.

-Tina, my son (age 4 1/2) also will stutter (or stumble) over words (whole

words - he'll just repeat the word several times as if he's not saying it right

and trying too?) Anyway, we just wait him out (although sometimes it's hard not

to say stop!), then repeat the word, statement whatever he was trying to tell us

slowly so he can hear it the right way. I tend to speak quickly and it's a

constant battle for myself to remember to s-l-o-w down when speaking! :)))

Hi Tina,

There's very good information and advice on this site (The Stuttering Foundation

of America):

http://www.stutteringhelp.org/

Hope this helps...

I would talk to your son's therapist to get specific recommendations, but if

you go here http://www.helpmychildtalk.com/stuttering.html you will see a

list of do's and don'ts when confronted with stuttering in a child.

Hope that helps!

Hi Tina - My son was diagnosed with severe CAS at age 3 and started

stuttering really badly at approx. 4 years of age. I was a wreck. He would

get stuck on the first word and say it about 5 times before the other words

came out. Now at 5-1/2 his stuttering is very very mild. Two SLPs

explained to me that it is very common with CAS and the child is anxious to

get the words out. They get ahead of themselves. Like Amy said, talk to

your SLP and there are really good technicques in the website she

suggested. Good luck!!

Tina,

I came across another resource, from the apraxia-kids website:

http://www.apraxia-kids.org/site/apps/nlnet/content3.aspx?c=chKMI0PIIsE & b=788447\

& ct=464475

The article mentions system overload and " backing off " from certain direct

intervention speech therapy techniques for a while, which was my initial

instinct when reading your original post.

HTH,

na (slp *and* mom of a toddler w/ probable verbal apraxia)

Thanks, I actually had found this article and read it a few weeks ago! But,

it was good for me to read it again! I think I'm going to send that link to

his SLP. We actually have backed off, kinda naturally cause we had to switch

days for his therapy since he is preschool now. So, we had to wait two weeks

till he could get in again. I haven't worked with him at home much at all

with his sounds either. He is getting therapy at school, but I don't really

consider it therapy, sad to say but true. But, I have been doing the the

other tips as best as I can and trying to remember to make myself slow down and

this week he hasn't stuttered as badly or as much at all. So, maybe it was

just a system overload like the article suggested! I hope so!

Are you an SLP as well? If so, I'd like to ask you a question about my

younger son if you don't mind... Let me know please!

Thanks so much for your help, everyone's help!!! Much appreciated!!!

tte,

Thanks so much!  It is nice to hear from someone who has been through it

before!  I have been a wreck about his speech also!!  It was just very

discouraging as he had been making so much progress.  Lately, it seems to be

getting better, hopefully it will last but you never know with this I guess.  My

son too, sticks on 1 word saying it 5 or more times before moving on and

sometimes he stutters on almost all the words in his sentence.  It is so hard to

watch him go through it.  I am hoping it was just a system overload and now it

will calm down.

Thanks so much for sharing with me!

You may ask, don't know if I can help, but yes, I'm an SLP...
