We're about an hour outside of NYC. But there are so many directions to

take--Long Island is outside NYC, I'm about an hour North of NYC. There are

also many, many good districts in NJ for people who work in NYC. There are many

good districts in the county I am in. My district is known for its great special

services and great schools overall. The district next door has great schools

overall but horrible special services where most parents have to fight for every

service. The County I grew up in just south of us is only 1/2 hour outside NYC

and there are districts where a LOT of parents of typical kids send them to

private school because the general education services are horrible and I know

some of the affluent districts have great schools..but again--horrible special

services.

I'm sure you'll get some tips from parents who live on Long Island but outside

NYC includes the tri-state area of NY/NJ and CT. All have good/bad schools and

special services. Its a very big area.

After the age of 3yr old -you'd need to contact Special Services and have them

do their evaluations and provide records from Early Intervention Services. Here

in NY-the 3-4yr olds are considered Preschool or CPSE. Once they hit K--it

becomes CSE.

old) has special needs and the other child (5 years old) is neurotypical.

I'm sorry I was not very specific -- we currently live in Hoboken, NJ where the

special ed services are good but the general ed. program is not so good. Some

areas we are considering are: Manhattan (Battery Park City?), northern NJ, and

Long Island (Great Neck / Port Washington?). Any input from the group would be

very helpful. Thanks!
