Guest guest
That is wonderful news ! Â Demi From: michelle yates <michelle_yates@...> Subject: [ ] OMG! Have to share....Craniosacral appt Date: Thursday, June 17, 2010, 1:38 PM Â Ok, I'm not normally like this, but this was just too amazing/funny not to share. My son saw the craniosacral therapist for the first time yesterday. This therapist worked with Dr. Upledger, and was the director of critical care. He was the lead of the team to separate the Egyptian twins joined at the head. Anyway, he indicated my son had compression on his left temperal side causing a great amount of pressure on the temperal bone. He also diagnosed a palate issue (we knew that one already due to the orthodontist). Mind you, he knew nothing of my son before we went, as he doesn't want to be biased based on other's diagnosis. He said " Your son has a speech planning issue due to the pressure on the left front side of his head! OMG---how would he know that?!?!? He worked on him for about an hour, showed me how to do it at home, and indicated he wanted to see him in about a week to make sure what he had done had stayed. We got in the car, and a little way down the road, my son (apraxic) says out of the blue and clear as a bell " Mommy my head doesn't hurt anymore, but my ear still itches. " (he has some eczema on his ear). I nearly wrecked the car in disbelief! He has never said that many words at once, much less as clearly as it was. And, he's never mentioned his head " hurting " before. He has spent all night and day talking up a storm! We went to the doctor today for my other child's well visit, and the doctor asked my son to be quiet for just a minute so he could listen to my other's heart and lungs. He has never been asked to stop talking!!!!! I just about died laughing upon his request! It is like a lock has been opened on my little guy, and he just can't stop! I'm just too excited for words! __________________________________________________________ Hotmail is redefining busy with tools for the New Busy. Guest guest
I too am a huge fan of craniosacral but as parents it's important to find those therapists that have knowledge in working with children. We did this for awhile with my two boys and many of us in this group did as well. Most of us, including for me in both my boys, notice subtle changes -but as always we'll take it! My boys both loved cranialsacral and would fall asleep during the massage, but it wasn't cheap and for us at the time it was out of pocket. To be honest I did sometimes wonder what it was like -but never had this type of massage myself. Our therapist (if you check the archives his name is Loren and he's in northern NJ or at least was when we went to him) also trained with Dr. Upleger. Then again I think most do to some extent as Dr. Upleger is 'the' man when it comes to this type of massage! When I first moved to Florida I did contact the Upleger Institute and they were interested in research in our group- but as you can find in the archives I sent out a message looking for interested parents in the West Palm Beach area of Florida and we didn't have enough children. Not that many apraxics around my house. I ended up not taking Tanner to the center even though I planned on it -but we did do dolphin therapy a bit But again do think it's worth exploring. The results you had are NOT at all typical..as again most of us that do go this route notice more subtle changes -but then again I archived and think it may just be that your child is just a typical late talker starting to surge and you are not recalling other longer sentences he is saying. Here's a message you sent about your 2 year old 4 months ago (he's 2 right?): " Austin looked at me last night, with " The Very Hungry Catepillar " book, and said " Mommy I want to read catepiwar book. " He replaces L's with W's still, but it was as clear as a bell. Austin hasn't ever showed interest in the book before, and had never attempted such a big word, much less in a sentence! His pre-k teacher reported that he was " super talkative " yesterday at class. " So at 2 years old it seems like you have yourself a child that may just have a developmental delay, or very mild impairment, some articulation issue at most? Either way it's all good -clearly even the sentence " Mommy I want to read catepiwar book. " OMG I wouldn't have dreamed of even some of the words in that sentence (even said poorly) for most of the apraxics I know at 4, no less 2! Congratulations and hope that I'm right and your journey is almost over in the area of delayed speech! That's a good thing!! =====

Guest guest
I discovered it through a very good friend of mine whose daughter started after doctors at Duke and UNC couldn't fiqure out what was causing her sudden severe vertigo. Check out the book " Your Inner Physician " for more medical info, as well as the Upledger Institue. There are also a couple of textbooks on barnesandnoble.com on the topic. Also, many austism sites have some good info. I am not a medical person, so I'm using very layman's terms. Basically, the craniosacral system involves your nervous system (spine, head, etc). The therapists are trained to listen to the flow of the sacral fluid, (much like the flow of blood). When they hear/encounter a block, they have make subtle movements to make adjustments to make it flow better, thus helping the neurons fire better and receive the messages better. The affect varies based on what/where the block is and the severity of the block. For my son, it was his left front temperal area which is the area that speech originates from. He has a large amount of tension in that area, along with his cranium sitting on top of his cheek bones, impacting the growth of his upper palate. The cost varies, but is usually somewhere around $100 per 1 hour session. The therapist we saw actually did the therapy on me to show me how to do it at home. From the 10 minutes he worked on me, I felt fluid movement on the left side of my head, much like if water had been slowly poured over the area. After just a couple of sessions, my friend's daughter has had a complete turn-around. He discovered her whip-lash (from soccer ball to the back of the head), which had set since it had been almost a full year, that all of the other specialists missed. BTW, our therapist did not charge us for his evaluation, and really wanted to help us by showing us how to do it at home to avoid excessive costs. HTH! From: tbniesh@... Guest guest
, First off, woo hoo! for your son! Are you in TX? I ask because your therapist sounds like an awesome therapist we met at some CS intensives and he's in the Dallas area. Take care, Jess
Guest guest
No, we're in NC. He came here from the Upledger Institute a few years ago as his wife could no longer handle the hurricanes in FL. Guest guest
Hi ,  That is a great news to share with all of us!! I just wonder why made you to see the craniosacral therapist in the first place? Does your son tell you his head hurts or some kind of behavior sign you notice before going?  Best wishes to your son and family,
Guest guest
Hi . Actually, he had never mentioned his head hurting before. But, since he has evidentially had these issues since birth, I don't know that he would know anything different than what it has always been, if that makes sense. I guess until you know relief, you don't realize the pain. I am very fortunate in that one of my dear friends, and godmother to my kids, is a bit of a medical guru, and is relentless in her searches when she gets started. She was actually looking for someone to take her daughter to in order to help the severe vertigo that the doctors at Duke and UNC couldn't solve. When she came across craniosacral therapy, she found many autistic and speech-imparied children had been helped. She interviewed our therapist, literally, as well as spoke with the Upledger Instititute, and read the textbooks on the subject. We also found the book " Your Inner Physician " to be quite helpful. Since an evaluation could do no harm (and it was free), we decided to give it a try. As I'm sure you know, apraxia doesn't show up on MRIs or CAT scans, so this seemed like the next best thing to hopefully get some answers to help him. The therapy makes sense in that if the fluids aren't flowing to the areas that need it, it will cause a deficiency, much in the same way blood not getting to areas of the brain causes strokes. I think he had some success because of the sheer amount of pressure on the left side. Kind of in the same way you lift a weight off of you, you would get some relief. My little guy has been diagnosed as verbally apraxic, so the only behavior issues we ever had was when he get mad when he couldn't communicate. I can say, since he perfomed the therapy on me to show me how to do it at home, I felt a rush of fluid on my left side, kind of like if water had been poured on it. My friend's daughter described it the same way with her therapy (she's 20), except hers was the back of her head, as her issue is in the spine. It's simply trying to get the fluid to flow to all parts of the system, so that it works better or as it should. Since I don't know where you're located, I would suggest contacting the Upledger Institute to get a listing of therapists in your area if you're interested. I'll also get the names of the textbooks if you're interested. HTH! From: clairezheng99@... Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2010 09:57:59 -0700 Subject: Re: [ ] OMG!
