Guest guest
Hi everyone! Thank you so much for the links, emails, and suggestions for T's ESY meeting. I wans't surprised in the least bit that they said no for ESY. Her SLP stated that she would not regress enough to justify extended school year. I told them that we are seeing a surge in mimmicking (NV!!)and some speech but that wasn't enough. One thing I did learn is that her SLP is working more on vocabulary than sounds. I questioned her on this and she said she is trying to get her ready for school. I then told her that Little T understands EVERYTHING, up, down, over, under. She can follow complex directions with just being told once, she knows how to spell her name both in sign language and writing, she can recognize her name in a group of names, she knows her colors, etc. What she can't do is talk. Then they dropped the bomb - they said she CAN TALK! Huh? She can? Funny...I haven't heard it yet. I was told that she is talking, we just can't understand her. Oh....ok. They aren't working on sounds with her...they are working on vocabulary. Umm..yeah, you can see my dilema. When they told me that I pretty much wrote the entire meeting off. I knew at that point I was wasting my time and I didn't need to continue to fight for ESY. If they aren't even working on her sounds why would I even bother? The SLP did give me a " summer program " that I can do with her and also gave it to her preschool teacher. Wanna know what's in it? Some papers on " b " words and " M " words and some flash cards for VOCABULARY words. Pictures for sports, the body, transportation. She already knows this stuff. She can't say it but she does sign it! She knows where her hands are and that she has 2 of them. She knows what a bus is, a train, a tractor. She knows what a bat and ball is for (come on - her brother plays for the Legion team and we are at ballgames 7 days a week!). As you can tell I'm pretty frustrated with our county's SLP. I know her hands are tied and she has to do the " educational " speech therapy but when a 4 year old is not talking (and I'm sorry, I don't consider babble talking) then something has to change. So, where do I go from here? Little T will continue with her private speech therapist 1x a week. We will work on her muscle tone for her jaw, tongue, cheeks. I'm trying to get her into a study at ECU for children with CAS (free speech therapy). And she will continue to get NV everyday (which she loves). Thanks for your support! ~Carla
