NOTE: This spring, our office has heard from scores of families facing challenges to their son or daughter's placement. In response to these new reports from school districts throughout the state, we've updated and re-published this article on changes to special education placements. Increasingly, school districts are proposing changes to a student's placement against the parents' wishes. When this occurs, parents need to know how to exercise their rights. School districts may give many reasons for making such changes, and parents should understand theirs and their children's rights, the law as it applies to processes and timelines, and what they should and shouldn't do if they disagree with a suggested change in program or placement.
