Kathy, Our children's challenges may different, but I still wanted to reply. I

have been home schooling my 10 yr old since kindergarten, and taught him to read

using a book by Jessie Wise and Sara Buffington called The Ordinary Parent's

Guide To Teaching Reading. I can't say enough good things about this book. There

are cards available to purchase, but I made my own with index cards & marker. In

her Preface she talks about teaching many children with the disability label to

read. She breaks it down into easy, doable steps. And although my son that I

used this method with does not have a " disability' I plan to start teaching my

almost 4 yr old this summer using it. He has mild apraxia and is Deaf. My hope

is that being able to read will help with his articulation.

It is so difficult sometimes trying to figure the best way we can help our

children. Hang in there.

some internet friends of mine who homeschool used Alphabet Island and another

used Explode the Code. I don't personally know anything about either except

that they both are phonics

do they use? I am trying to figure out how to teach phonics to my son. His

speech is not so bad. We are doing ABA and I'm not so happy with this approach.

He is not happy lately. He has so much anxiety lately. Thinking about ending

this ABA .

> We are 2 weeks off of Depakote. We have a doctors office visit next Monday.

I hope she has some wisdom on how to help us or get a second opinion about his

brain spect scan.

> Sorry I'm feeling in the dumps today. When my son is upset it just brings me

down. I live in a state that mandates ABA for insurance to pay. We stayed in

this state do to the waivers which are on a long long waiting list and the ABA.

Now I am wanting to move . The only place I have family is St sburg ,Fl .

> The schools here are terrible. Just again in our school district a teacher

and aide bound a autistic child's hands and tied him to his chair with a belt

and tilt the chair back. So out of fear I cannot have him go to school. I'm not

sure if this happen to my child if he could tell me this happened to him.

www.starfall.com is my favorite free site for teaching phonics. You can order

materials from them, but everything you need is right there on the site.
