Friday, October 23, 2009 University of Connecticut Conference Center Room 108 20 Broad Street Stamford, CT 06901 Course Overview: This hands-on, practical, therapy-rich presentation will focus on strategies for clinicians that facilitate verbal communication for children with apraxia of speech. An overview of diagnostic considerations will be presented. The majority of the presentation will be intervention-based, with a wide range of treatment ideas described. A multi-sensory approach to treatment will be detailed. Videotaped examples of children in treatment will be used to highlight therapy ideas and suggestions for carryover outside of the treatment setting. Challenging cases will be discussed as well as those that have been more successful in treatment. Suggested therapy resources will be discussed. Attendees will leave with creative, practical, and useful ideas they can begin using immediately in treatment for their clients with childhood apraxia of speech. The majority of the cases presented will be of toddler, preschool, and early school-age, although videotapes of older children will be used to enhance discussion regarding this age group. The Speaker: Dave Hammer, M.A. CCC-SLP has been employed by Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania since graduating with his Master’s in Speech-Language Pathology in 1979. He has been the Coordinator of Speech and Language Services at the Children’s Hospital North satellite facility since 1988. Dave has a wide range of clinical experience, with specialty in apraxia of speech in children, childhood and adolescent stuttering, and severe articulation/phonological disorders. Dave has been invited to present workshops on apraxia of speech throughout the United States, Canada, and Australia. He brings a “hands-on†perspective to his presentations, which include extensive videotaped segments of treatment in action. Dave was a member of the ASHA AdHoc committee on childhood apraxia of speech and is currently a member of the Childhood Apraxia of Speech Association of North America Advisory Board. He has been a significant contributor to the production of the children’s CD “Time to Singâ€, the introduction to apraxia DVD “Hope Speaksâ€, and the DVD on “Treatment Strategies for Childhood Apraxia of Speechâ€.
