Guest guest
Jeanne, I have a couple questions that i thought you might be able to answer, or at least direct me of a place to go. My son is 2.5 and was diagnosed a couple months ago with Apraxia of Speech. He has been in speech therapy for a a little over 5 months with Early Intervention. Today we had a transition meeting with EI and the preschool my son will be attending. They are looking at starting him right after spring break, which is about a month before his 3rd birthday. Unfortunately he will only be in preschool for 2 months before gettng out for the summer. They want to get him into the summer program but to qualify for it they need proof of regression. There are no breaks between spring break and summer break so she said they might be able to qualify him if we have any proof that kids with Apraixa of Speech regression when there is a break in their speech therapy. Do you know where I could find any documentation of children regressing during breaks in service? Thank you so much, is Velardo Mom to , 2.5 years old Diagnosed with Apraxia of Speech, Sensory Intergration Disorder and Weak Muscle Tone email mommyofmaknchz@... Guest guest
http://cherab.org/information/speechlanguage/therapyintensity.html If you go down about half the page (this is a justification page for one on one therapy), you will find a paragraph that starts with " We recommend intensive therapy.... " and this says that there will be regression if therapy discontinues for a long time " like over the summer " . I didn't have time ot read through it all but there are probably more you can find on this same page. Guest guest
I'm trying to see if they are explaining it backwards to you? You do not need to prove that he has regressed in order to qualify for ESY (Extended School Year)!!! All you need is a therapist to say that he is very likely to regress during the summer break if he does NOT get services--they cannot turn it around to say you must prove that there is regression! There are on IEP's with a ton of ESY information!! Most therapists should be able to support that a preschooler with an Apraxia dx would regress during a long summer break without speech services! iepguidefilesII/message/718 The following is a list of all criteria that should be considered in determining eligibility for ESY, based on the data gathered before the IEP meeting: 1. 22 Pa. Code Section 14.34( and © state, ESY determination can be based (not must be) on the traditional regression/recoupnient criteria. Definition of Regression/Recoupment: Regression is defined as reversion to a lower level of ft=tioning evidenced by a measurable decrease in the level of skiffs or behaviors which occurs as the result of an interruption in educational programming. Recoupment is defined as recovery of skills or behavioral patterns, or both, specified on the IEP to a level demonstrated prior to the interruption of educational programniing. Following these definitions a child is eligible if regression caused by interruption in educational programming and limited recoupment capacity, makes it unlikely that the student will attain or maintain skills and behavior relevant to established IEP goals and objectives. However to be found eligible for ESY, it is not necessary that the child have first experienced regression during a program break, in order to receive ESY during the subsequent program break. Most therapists should be able to support that a preschooler with an Apraxia dx would regress during a long summer break. > > Jeanne, >summer program but > to qualify for it they need proof of regression.
