Guest guest
We live in NY--where Early Intervention is known for its very good services. My dd is 8yrs old now--so we've been out of EI for a long time. What she had back than was Sp 2x per week. Her Apraxia dx didnt come till she was 4yrs old. Sp was also the last of the services we added. I had heard that very severe cases would get 3x per week--but we were out of EI by the time that would have helped. Sessions were 45minutes-depending on her mood. If she didnt cooperate--we let her play and I chatted with the therapists. 2x a week was more than enough at that age...you still have to live your life and it comes around fast enough. I also mentioned that Sp ws the last service we added. We already had PT and OT 2x a week--so adding Speech made it 6x a week and ended my life outside the house as I knew it!! You may also want to look into Augmentive Communication too. There are very, simple 4 Button machines that would just hold basic wants/needs of hers that might get her used to this type of communicatoin so you can broaden her forms of communicatoin and reduce frustration. Guest guest
Hi Sam as far as speech therapy funding goes, your daughter is only 3 so would still qualify under the resource program through community services. Where exactly do you live in ontario? My son received services from Simcoe county community services. once they are in school though, it gets a little tougher, and since my son was so severe he received services through CCAC (community care access-long term health care ) let me know where you are and i'll try to help you out! sandy ________________________________ From: Sam <lbrass@...> Sent: Friday, September 18, 2009 9:42:36 PM Subject: [ ] New to the group- questions re therapy and funding Hi everyone, My dd was just diagnosed with severe apraxia. Here is a little background: She is 3 yrs old. Has severe GERD- has had a feeding tube since 10 weeks old but has been eating drinking enough in the past 4 months so we have not had to tube feed her. She is on her second set of ear tubes- has had hearing problems on and off since 4 months of age. She understands everything but can only say mama and da and never on command. She is very very tiny for age (21 lbs and 30 " ) so they are looking for a syndrome for her but have not had any luck so far. She is very very feisty but has major behavioral problems (we are hoping due to her frustration with lack of communication) She signs about 20 words. I have so many questions but the two biggest ones are: 1. how many speech therapy sessions do your kids get a week? 2. if you live in Ontario Canada how do you get funding for speech therapy? thanks so much for your help __________________________________________________________________ The new Internet Explorer® 8 - Faster, safer, easier. Guest guest
Hi and welcome to the group. To answer your question about how much therapy: My son is 2 years and 8 months and receives 1.5 hours through Birth To Three and 1 hour I pay for per week. He gets ST 5x a week at 30 mins. each session plus, he receives OT 1x a week for 45 mins through Birth To Three as well. My son just has verbal apraxia and just started pre-school 3 mornings a week and seems to be holding his own and loving it. I hope this helps. ________________________________ From: " NotefrmSue@... Guest guest
Hi Sandy We live in Burlington (region of Halton) . Evangelique currently gets 45 minutes per week of speech therapy thru Oak- (we were advised that is all the gov't will cover- even with the Apraxia diagnosis) She has a CCAC case worker (we have a dietician that comes to our home every 3 weeks to weigh her) I called her case worker to see if CCAC would be able to cover any other private speech therapy but she said they won't pick her up for speech til Oct of her SK year. My husband and I both have coverage through work but it only totals $650 per year so that will gone in 2-3 weeks of private therapy How old is your son? Did he speak at all entering school? Our next step is JK- we have to decide by January what we are doing with her and public shcool?? thanks for all your help Sam _____ From: [mailto: ] On Behalf Of sandy lehmann Sent: Saturday, September 19, 2009 10:41 AM Subject: Re: [ ] New to the group- questions re therapy and funding Hi Sam as far as speech therapy funding goes, your daughter is only 3 so would still qualify under the resource program through community services. Guest guest
Hi Sam, I actually held back a year and kept him in a preschool so that I could get the extra year of services. Once in school, the services slow down considerably. had no words upon entering SK and even then, I had to call them all the time until he got picked up for CCAC speech. What I did then was to have the slp do the block of speech at school and when they did the break, I had that same SLP privately that I paid for. Unfortunately, they do a 8 week on, 10 week off schedule with CCAC, even though it clearly not the way to do therapy for apraxia He just turned 10 and this is the way we've been doing it since he entered school. It is alot of money to pay privately, but we keep all the receipts that the insurance won't cover and claim that on our taxes since we have done the t22 (i think) form that is signed by the doctor. I'd talk to any other therapists that you deal with and see what they recommend. I know my case worker won't tell us everything thats available, which is why talking to the ones you deal with face to face are a better resource of information. we also have a family worker through simcoe community services that helps us with things. Unfortunately trying to get speech through gov't funding is like pulling teeth, but if you persevere, you'll get more than they want to give! hth sandy ________________________________ From: Lanny Brass <lbrass@...> Sent: Saturday, September 19, 2009 1:19:56 PM Subject: [ ] RE: New to the group- questions re therapy and funding Hi Sandy We live in Burlington (region of Halton) .
