I see butterflies everywhere. Funny how something so ordinary can tug at the

heart and bring memories flooding back.

We were four the first time we went to live with my grandmother. My twin

sister, Diane, and I had been rustled from bed when my father got home from

his late shift. We were bundled into the car and driven through the night to

his mother in South Carolina. Our mother was not well, but we were not

allowed to talk about it. We would wake sometimes during the night to find

her standing in the room with a knife to guard against the voices in her

head who told her she was not safe and we were in danger. This was not a

horror movie; this was our everyday reality.
