Guest guest
Hello Everyone! It has been quite a while since I last posted, but I wanted to give you all an update on our son Jack. A little back-ground... Posted February 15th, 2010 Hello Everyone, I wanted to give you all an update on my 25 month old son Diagnosed with CAS. My son started on the NN fish oils when he was 20 months old with a small surge in soft vowel production. (He previously had no words and made very few sound other than grunting and pointing.) He also started Speech therapy with a private speech therapist once a week at that time (because EI did not have a speech therapist available and still doesn't.) He began using " B, " " M, " and " P " consonants with soft vowels at around 23months but he had no words and was not mimicking any sounds. At 24 months he did start to pick up some animal sound approximations " ba and moo " and was able to say " moe " for more. We had his 6 month re-evaluation (through EI) in the middle of January. They evaluated his expressive language to be at 12 months and increased his therapy to twice a week. (He has no other delays.) He does have some hypotonia in his lower lip and tongue. After careful consideration and the " OK " from his pediatrician, I started our 24 and ½ month old son on Nutriiveda on February 1st. It has been two weeks and we have seen him go from 1-2 word approximations to well over 50 word approximations! He will try to mimic anything I ask him too. He even has some two word approximations: " la oo " for love you! He can make all consonant sounds now except for " j, t, d, and s. " I did not tell his speech therapist when I started him and she could not believe the difference! She said he was mimicking and trying any word she asked! I can now get him to mimic whole sentences: I will say one word at a time and he will repeat it. He will say " I - wan - moe - ruck - pees " for I want more truck please. He has many more spontaneous approximations as well. He can even say some words spontaneously and perfectly: " pop, happy, me, my, mama, baby, go, up, yeah, wee, uh-oh " and I am sure there are a few more that I am not thinking of right now. He will even sing along with his new CD aimed at children with CAS " Drills on Wheels! " So it has been about a month now since he was evaluated to be 12 months expressively and I took him to Chicago to see a Developmental Pediatrician (to get a formal diagnoses) on Friday. There was a speech therapist, a developmental therapist, an occupational therapist, a child psychiatrist, and the Pediatrician in the room for his evaluation. They determined that his expressive speech is now at a 21 month level! That means he went from a 12 month level to a 21 month level in less than a month (and two weeks on the Nutriiveda!) We were amazed and so was the group that evaluated him! I did bring a label and some of our group's information to let them know about the Nutriiveda, but they pretty much dismissed that it could be the Nutriiveda. They told us to keep doing " whatever " we were doing. I believe differently of course! I can't say that there have been many other noticeable changes in my son, but he has never had any behavioral problems and he has always been very social. I do think he focuses a little better during his speech therapy sessions but other than that, I haven't noticed any other changes. (As if the speech wasn't enough!) Update: So, Jack has been on two heaping half scoops of Nutriiveda (and his NN fish oils) since the 2nd week of February. He is now 28 months old and according to his speech therapist is around the 23-25 month level for his speech! He will attempt any word spontaneously now and I would say I can understand ~90-95% of what he says. Someone who is not around him often would probably understand ~80-85% of what he says. He still mostly speaks in one or two word spontaneous sentences, but has recently started using three word combinations like: " carry me out " and " cover me up. " He does say many other words together but with pauses such as " Truck " ... " Hook-up " ... " boat. " Oh, I forgot to mention he is now able to use his " t " and " d " sounds at the beginning and end of words! (He is saying consonant-vowel-consonant words perfectly.) He still has difficulty with " s " at the beginning of words but is able to use " sh " at the end of words where " s " should be. Although we have a long road ahead of us, I am so happy with his progress so far. He has gone from basically no spontaneous words to more words that I can count and even some short sentences. He has no trouble getting his point across now. He also can whisper and blow bubbles and whistles now. It is amazing that all of this has happened in the last 3 months! We are now working on more action verbs and putting them in sentences. He says " Peopo ride bike " when he sees people riding bikes on the bike path outside. It is so great to see him expressing what he sees around him. He still waits for me to repeat it back to him sometimes to make sure that I understand exactly what he said. The funny thing is...his words have become so much clearer that I rarely DON'T understand him! I also wanted to report that the low tone in his lower lip is almost undetectable now even for those who know he has (or had) low tone there! Again...we want to thank for bringing this phenomenal product to the group and for all of the great parents here that share their stories! Guest guest
your update is so incredible that it falls into my Tanner updates- unrelatable to most here. As you notice more will congratulate " my child said mommy for the first time " rather than the type of updates I post now -or yours- which are MIND BLOWING OMG INCREDIBLE! Of course when it comes to Tanner it's clear it was not a developmental surge as he is 13 years old and had those horrible regressions that lasted for 7 months after less than 2 weeks on that product called SPEAK and I guess in some small way I have to be thankful for that product I now consider poison because I believe it messed up Tanner metabolic system which affected his weight or why else would I have put Tanner onto a full dosage of nutriiveda anyway??!! I never would -and none of us would have ever known what we know now. That it works the way the body needs it. Now for your Jack- I can't even imagine that any of the advocacy will be much needed a few years from now -he's quickly approaching falling into the norm- and that's a good thing. We now know that some of the strategies we are using to help overcome apraxia appear to be helping our children soar above and beyond the rest of the " normal " classmates. Again I believe it to be the addition of the essential nutrients that are probably in good part lacking or missing in today's diets -especially in children. So from one mother that is thrilled to death to be on the other side or close to the shore to another- CONGRATULATIONS KATIE AND JACK!!!! And to those that are thinking which I know this is the thought " oh this is just a coincidence " Here is a message from when pulled Jack off for less than a week as you never made it the full week before putting him back on nutriiveda right? ~~~~~~~~~ > > Hello , > > I apologize for not posting sooner, but our family took a short vacation this week so I didn't want to spend much time on the computer. We just got home this afternoon. Anyway, Jack has been off of NV ( and his NN fish oils) for 1 week and 1 day now. (His last NV shake was Thursday night 02/18/2010.) I guess I have some good and some bad news to report (depending on how you look at it. ) > > The first two days he was off of the NV, I didn't notice any differences. On the third day, I began to see the following changes. The good news (and suprising news) is that we have not seen any regression in the words that Jack has recently picked up! The " bad " news is that I have noticed a significant regression in his focus and attention span. (This was also noted by his SLP during his last therapy session - Monday.) I think he is babbling less and doesn't seem to be picking up any new words as well. The other negative thing I have noticed over the past few days is Jack has been hitting more frequently. He used to hit (me, my husband, his brother or anyone around him) almost as a reflex. (I don't think this correlated with his speech in anyway because he didn't seem to do it in relation to speech frustration. ) You could tell by his face that he didn't mean to do it immediately after it > happened. It seemed as though he > > didn't have control over it. It stopped a little while ago, but I think it was before we started the NV. Either way, the hitting has started again. This is something I will be interested to keep an eye on when we start back on the NV Monday evening. I can't wait to put him back on it. > > , I feel like you may be right in your thoughts that NV may be repairing the problem areas in the brain. This would explain Jack's ability to keep the new words he has learned, but stop any new progression now that he is off of it. You may have been seeing verbal regression in the older kids because there may be more long term damage there. Perhaps because Jack is only 25 months there is less damage to repair and therefore less regression?? ? Just a thought. I will keep you posted if we see any other changes now that we are back home and back to our usual schedule. > > Feel free to give me a call again if you want to discuss this further! > > Thanks! > > IL ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I'm thinking of adding both your newest update -and the one above to show the areas of regression to our testimony page http://pursuitofresearch.org/testimonials.html What do you think?!! =====
