Guest guest
Can Apraxia affect pretend play at all? My son will only play pretend if I play with him but he typically won't initiate the play. Do any of your children get confused? He sometimes will say " goodnight mommy " when he really means to say " goodnight daddy " . He corrects himself. Will my son ever speak " normally " ? He has oral Apraxia and my husband seems to think that with time his mouth is going to some how change and his speech will get better and he will pucker and blow bubbles. I keep trying to tell him that it is not that. Its neurological right? Mother of 3 1/2 year old son.
Guest guest
Yes. My speech therapist says that the more you can get the child the do imaginative play, act things out, imitate the more it will help their speech. Even if the imaginative play does not require talking it can help them with their speech because imiatating things in general helps them. My son had great difficulty imitating anything I did (like playing heads and shoulders knees and toes for example). One thing I did with him was try to come up with some imitating or imaginative play things that didn't require any talking because it built up his confidence. For example, he loved to play " Dog " and he would crawl around and his brother and I would say " What a cute little puppy. " , " Fetch " , etc. Now as he gains words I notice more and more a willingness to play imaginatively and even initiate it sometimes. I believe your son can learn to pucker and blow bubbles with appropriate oral motor therapy. My son could not do this before but now he can! He couldn't blow a kiss, blow a feather across a table, blow a whistle, etc before but about about 6 months of therapy he can. These are muscles that aren't developed properly and they need to be strengthened. Good luck! [ ] questions??? Can Apraxia affect pretend play at all? Guest guest
Yes, my daughter is 5 now and improved almost beyond recognition and still calls me dad and her speech therapist mom sometimes. Especialy when tired. Word retrieval is a common problem with apraxia, just as the inconsistency in pronunciation is. She now self corrects--but it is a sign of neurological issues--stuck motor planning if you like. it takes them much longer to learn certain words and they are slower at motor planing, but can also get stuck--and appear as if they do not know--when in fact they do but just are stuck with the wrong motor plan. It gets better with time.--therapy and supplements thaqt are appropriate for your child. Neurological functioning has to be optimized and the more she learns to say, the quicker the motor planning can change and adapt. Her pretend play is just now the way it should ahve been at 3. So there are continuous delays since she is just now able to say and do things tha tother kids have been saying and doing for over 2 years or more. They do catch up and learn to self correct etc.--but it is one more reason to try to optimize neurological functioning by working on metabolic processing and NOT leaving it all to therapy and time. These kids have some metabolic biochemical issues that are NOT right, and they need to be identified and addressed to show real improvement. Good luck! Guest guest
Yes, in regards to saying one word instead of another. I can see that happening in my son sometimes. He will correct himself afterwards. It's a word retrieval problem. Like Elena said, it's like stuck motor planning where one word that is similar and easier to say seems to come out instead of the proper one. Although my son has always had good pretend play, we noticed it getting even better once we added the fish oil supplements and started addressing some dietary issues. I wish I could tell you that your son will speak normally. I wished so much myself to hear that when my son was 24 months old and only said 5 words. But no one could because each child with apraxia is different so prognosis is very difficult to predict. My advice is to READ READ READ about all the different ways you can help your kiddo. From speech and occupational therapies to nutritional supplements and changes. There are many things you can try. We've had success with both and now my little guy is much improved. ~Jen, mom to Tiernan 2 1/2 > > Can Apraxia affect pretend play at all? Guest guest
this is interesting b/c my son has called my husband mama, mom and mommy esp when tired and has to be reminded that he's talking to daddy. I always thought it was b/c of his tongue tie and the d sound was learned late.
