Guest guest
It sounds to me like you found a good OT Yay!!!...bad news second...your SLPs sound like they are ALL (!!!) clueless. Apraxia therapy or motor planning therapies are not in themselves oral motor therapy. You should schedule an appointment with an oral motor specialist and I'd fire 1 and 3 and see if you can request someone different for 2- what an ____iot (last 3 letters and starts with an i). If you have a child with apraxia and oral motor issues you really want an SLP who is a hero, a rock star. In certain areas these better SLPs are so busy they are hard to get appointments with -but share your state or country and we can see if we can make suggestions. =====
Guest guest
I agree with . Find a new SLP who truly understand apraxia, the importance of structured oral placement exercises, and how to incorporate sensory needs into the overall therapy plan! That is what I do with my clients---use a combination of what they need to succeed with speech. I don't know where in NJ you are but we are located in County, MD. We are expert in the above. J call the office if you would like to schedule an evaluation. If you have any other questions, let me know & I will try to help. Guest guest
/Barbara - thank you both for responding! I would LOVE referrals and recommendations. We're in New Jersey, Union county, to be more specific the Summit/Westfield area. We could also do Essex and parts of /Middlesex/Sommerset counties. Barbara - I would love to have you see him, but we'd still have the issue of finding someone appropriate to treat him close to home :-( BTW, SLP #2 is going on maternity leave. Her replacement starts Aug 2nd. Found out on Tuesday - Yay! It took us 9 weeks to get our 3rd hour of EI speech filled, so we thought it better to wait it out. I'm sure we'd still be waiting if we had requested a replacement. Now, we just have to hope for the best... though admittedly by now I'm a little disillusioned with EI for speech (fortunately, our other therapists have been fabulous!). Kind regards, -
Guest guest
Ortega was one of Tanner's SLPs from when he was little that I LOVE!!! She used to be in another town -looks like she moved to Berkeley Heights (love that town and it's last I checked one of the least sued school districts -I used to live right near there) is one of those awesome SLPs that is aware that you need to look at the whole body -she's the one that taught me the importance of incorporating all different strategies, toys, approaches... Here's 's website http://www.communicareltd.com Ortega A Ms CCC SLP 312 Springfield Avenue Berkeley Heights, NJ 07922-1277 (908) 898-0202 In my opinion look NO FURTHER!!! Word of notice is that area of Jersey is jam packed block to block with apraxic and autistic children so I'm sure it's SUPER hard to get in to see her. I know from personal experience way back when that LOVES aggressive parents that will last minute take an appointment, see her on an off hour on a weekend, call her numerous times to see if there are any openings...and I had my notebook and Tanner's communication book with me at all times of course. If you can't get in with her -OMG you are in the mecca of apraxia-land...can't think of her name at the moment but there is an SLP in Summit I know that lots liked too -but so many in Jersey that know what they are doing. Were you the one with all the clueless SLPs??? If so you have to drop everything ...stop reading this...and call . Trust me she went through helping me with tons of clueless about apraxia professionals through the school mainly. Today there's in my opinion no excuse -especially if you are in Jersey!! Call !!! (tell her I said hi and will call her to put Tanner on the phone but she has to be sitting down so she doesn't faint!) PS these were written by for Tanner and our nonprofit group that I've had up on the site for years Mealtime tips http://www.cherab.org/information/speechlanguage/mealtimetips.html Feeding tips http://www.cherab.org/information/speechlanguage/feeding.html =====
