Guest guest
My child is 5 and has Down syndrome--I suspected he had dispraxia 3 years ago. I took him to All Children's Hospital in St. sburg, FL this past August. He was 4yo. The therapist used a flip book with pictures of common objects. She diagnosed my son with apraxia within a few minutes. I highly suggest making an appointment at the closest children's hospital for a speech evaluation! My son was in the early intervention and school based therapies plus one summer of private therapy, yet noone suggested apraxia. I think a typical 2-3yo could be easily diagnosed w/apraxia---just go to the children's hospital. colleen
Guest guest
Unfortunately not all Children's hospitals are the same. The team from the children's hospital told me my son did not have apraxia, but they did misdiagnose him at age 2.5 with " moderate autism. " Not high functioning, mild, etc...moderate. I was certain from day one that they were wrong. It took another 18 months before we received an apraxia diagnosis. Turns out that apraxia isn't that common where we were so most of the SLPs he came in contact with had never seen a child with it before. He also presented a little bit of an atypical case because while he clearly is apraxic he also has a language disorder, therefore he didn't have the classic receptive much higher than expressive and speech production. He still was easily diagnosed when we finally found someone who knew what apraxia was when faced with it instead of just as something that was learned about in school.
