Guest guest
We just had an IEP meeting two weeks ago and brought 2 extra people with us. One was an advocate and the other was my son's behavior therapist. He has apraxia and autism. We wanted to get him an aide and have him in a typical classroom for part of the day. The advocate was not much help but our therapist was awesome. We were very prepared. The advocate was actually surprised at how much we have already done for my son. His IEP is very good-detailed. We managed to get a little more than we wanted. As far as speech is concerned they evaluated him and told us he passed his articulation test. We just laughed. They said that because he has had so much private therapy he has learned how the tests work and respond accordinly. He is far from being understood by anyone! We do not rely on speech at school. It is still good for him because they practice social skills but as far as specialized therapy we do it on our own. We have provided his teacher with all the tools we use but speech is always in group. I would bring documentation from a doctor saying that your child NEEDS one on one speech. That may help.
