I'm curious as well. I have 8 year old twins that have both been diagnosed with

epilepsy and severe speech apraxia and they both have these circles as well.

God Bless,

Thank you everyone who has replied to my post so far. I am getting some awesome

feedback so far. I am finding it  interesting that a percentage of our children

have these dark circles to varying degrees and for various reasons also. So far

after very extensive allergy testing (the horrifying painful kind) ( 6 sets of

square shaped like blocks with  little needles each in them ) ( over  50

needles) put in my sons back for skin allergy testing. He has enviromental

allergies, severe asthma and several severe medicine allergies. No food

allergies  so far all those tests came back negative.

So far these dark circles seem to never go away completely. He seems to have

them no matter what they just seem to only change in varying shades of color

from dark to light depending on the day or if sick they change to really dark

and he turns very ghostly colored very pale if very sick.

So far no reason ahs been given for them.

My Son has Apraxia and Hypotonia and never has had the dark circles under

his eyes. His " typical " older sister is another story. Her eyes often

look like she has bluish circles under both of them. This all started about 1

or 2 months ago. The allergy answers make sense to me- here is why:

We had a very bizarre situation with our daughter 3 weeks ago. Here is

the story.

Alyssa is 4.5 years old. She was complaining of a right sided headache

on an off for 2 days- this was relieved with Tylenol. She then started to

complain of her " eye feeling funny " -- the eye looked ok- no redness, nothing

in it, etc. She had a slight temp of 100.7 that evening.... I gave her a

1/2 dose of Tylenol- and the temp was normal before she went to bed.

When she woke up in the am- her right eye was swollen completely shut.

She could not open her eye. I called the Pediatrician and got an early

appointment- he diagnosed " Periorbital Cellulitis " -- and put her on

Amoxicillin.

I was to call back in 4 hours to tell the doc if it was improving. It

got worse- so I called back 2 hours later- I was told to take her to our

Children's Hospital ER. Alyssa was actually admitted and was inpatient for 3.5

days receiving IV antibiotics and various tests- the scariest for her was

the CT Scan-- but it was done in a " kid friendly room " ... she was so

distracted by the movie they played for her, and all the cool lights flashing

on

the ceiling, and paintings on the walls- it was over before she had time to

think about being massively scared!

Her Periorbital Cellulitis was caused by a sinus infection that got into

her eye socket because the bone separating these 2 areas is very thin. The

scare with this is that the infection could have gone from the eye socket- to

the eye itself-- and then from the eye to the brain- which could cause

meningitis.

I stayed in the hospital with her during her stay. I learned that she

should see an ENT doc in the future for her sinus issues. Ever since this, my

daughter has had continued dark circles below both eyes AND Her stuffy nose

remains!!!!! ..... I therefore, think that the allergy related thoughts

make sense. I have not yet had my daughter tested for allergies..... The

stuffiness seems to be only in the late fall and early winter months

historically with her. I have the same stuffiness issues- and have never been

tested for allergies.

One last comment- the staff at Children's Hospital of Pgh. was wonderful!

Alyssa came home with so many crafts- the Rockettes even visited her in

her room! I was extremely sleep deprived from being disturbed all night by

all of the residents, but all and all- our stay there was very nice- and

they went out of their way to make a scary situation for a 4 year old a fun

one!

Hi,

My pulmonologist calls it allergy/asthma shiners..She told me the shiners are a

dead giveaway for it. I have had them most of my life, and have had seasonal

environmental allergies since I was 10. My daughter who has apraxia also has

the purple shiners. Other than peanuts, she does not have food allergies. She

does however, have seasonal allergies as well and during allergy season, her

shiners become more noticeable. My other daughter, does not have apraxia, but

she does have the shiners but with a more mild reaction to seasonal allergies.
