Guest guest
Just found this support group a week or so ago. I like it a lot. I have known about the other support group for a long time but it gets a little intimidating and have never felt really comfortable posting to the list there. I checked out the new web site and it is great. I am determined to follow CR as best I can since I am pushing 50 am now ~30 lb over my ideal weight (was 35lb over) and am still in great health according to my last labs (August 2001) BP and bone scan. But I'm determined to stay that way or improve. Main concerns are weak, sore ankles and knees and occasional sciatica. Can't run without pain in my ankles and can't go down stairs without pains in my knees and ankles. Still pounding up and down the corridors as a nurse and will have to keep that up for another 15 to 20 years before I retire -- so, gotta do something. My husband is also interested in maintaining health, has read Walford ( but ultimately followed " Body for Life " book and got his weight down and muscles built up) but my 2 teen sons are more interested in comfort foods. My main difficulty is that I hate to cook (Walford recipes seem so elaborate and involved) and I get waylaid by potluck type food that co-workers bring in especially on busy busy nights with no proper breaks. And I do get very very hungry especially when I start to lose weight. Have been considering using an appetite controller such as Meridia but not too sure of the long term effects. Have been using a diet and weight tracker that is pretty good (tracks 13 food components but not amino acids or anti oxidants) and it has helped me lose about 8 lb. Have enjoyed reading the posts here and look forward to contributing more.
Guest guest
Hi Francesca That's just it ... I don't run or jog for exercise but if I HAVE TO run ( say to get out of the way of a speeding car) it hurts my ankles for days after --- not good at all ....and I have great hopes that losing weight and optimizing my nutrition will improve the situation and help my knees and ankles to rehabilitate. in a message dated 6/9/2002 6:06:37 PM Pacific Daylight Time, fskelton@... writes: Why are you running (do you mean jogging?)? Guest guest
welcome! Why are you running (do you mean jogging?)? Especially with pain. I never make elaborate meals. Here is a posting of typical day's menus in the archives (very simple meals) but I no longer take all the supplements that are listed in this post: /message/168 on 6/9/2002 8:38 PM, L106@... at L106@... wrote: > Just found this support group a week or so ago. Guest guest
Hello , From your knee and ankle problems it sounds like you are a " heavy " walker by which I mean you really dig your heels in when walking. People like that often sound like they are stomping around upstairs. Also, you may notice that you make more foot noise then the person next to you while walking side by side. If this is true, then you are jolting your bones and joints with each step. It is aggravated by being overweight as well. Walking affects the back too and may be an underlying problem to your recurrant sciatic nerve problems. First remedy....learn to walk quieter. Place a book on your head...yep, just like at finishing school...and walk smoothly and quietly. Practice practice practice and concentrate on being noiseless. Second remedy....Loose weight while doing remedy one. Bob > Just found this support group a week or so ago. I like it a lot. Guest guest
I think you may have hit the nail on the head re "heavy" walking. I read your notes about that on an earlier post and it made sense. Of course carrying a lot of extra weight doesn't help - particularly in the kind of job I have where I do a lot of walking. Thanks for everyone's good advice In a message dated 6/11/2002 4:50:26 AM Pacific Daylight Time, papilio28570@... writes: Hello , From your knee and ankle problems it sounds like you are a "heavy" walker by which I mean you really dig your heels in when walking. Nothing there to absorb all the shock except your bones and joints. Bob
