Hi,

I need some help in regards to my son . Any speech experts out there? My

son is doing ABA and its getting on my nerves some what. They want to increase

his labeling because they say it will help increase his expressive language.

Well I know my son can label over 100 of things and he just doesn't like to

answer all the time questions like " what is " What are you doing " all the time.

I really don't get how labeling helps you want to talk . For example they want

him to label things in the kitchen ok here is a almost 10 yr old boy what the

heck is interesting to him to label things in a kitchen. Well they told me if he

drops a fork he needs to know how to ask for another fork so he needs to label

fork. Well I found out today he knows what a fork is and I bet if he drop the

fork either he would get up and get one or better yet he would use his darn

fingers. His speech is much more improving just labeled Kangaroo and said it

with great speech. I wish I knew the secret to get my son to just talk on his

own. We are on 2 scoops on NV wonder if I should increase it ? I am tempted to

pu t him back on Depakote he was much mellow. His anxiety and aggression is due

to his elevated neurotransmitters.

I need to make an appt . The doctor told me he has adrenal stress and that she

recommends some herbs for this. I just want him to talk on his own. I don't know

what speech therapy can get a child to just talk .

I wish I could have him in a good school and stop ABA yes 40 hrs of people in

my house. I live in Indiana not much here . This state is 20 yrs behind when it

comes to knowledge and help.

Well sorry for venting but my anxiety level is up. I just want to go to FLorida

on a beach . Well maybe the Atlantic side.

Kathy,

You don't want to come to Florida--except to vacation-because they are even more

behind than Indiana. I want to encourage you to hang in there. Get Play to

Talk/contact the Communicating Partners website w/Dr. Mac. This site is

geared towards parents and working in the home in a way that is compatible to

being a mom/dad/kid! Ask questions about other schools in your area. I have

found therapies and teachers vary greatly w\in the same distric. In our area in

Fl there is only one inclusive classroom for k-2. I am trying to get my little

guy in there and starting to stress about the upcoming iep this monday. There

comes a point for prayer and asking God for wisdom and intervention w/school

officials teachers therapists etc. Breathe.

concern is if your child NEEDS ABA therapy? What is your son's diagnosis? ABA if

not appropriate can be detrimental- read Mel's background?

you!)

stories here including Mel's -it's getting children off Depakote who have

seizures. I am not one for medicating a child unless necessary -are you noticing

surges with nutriiveda? If your child is stressed it may again have to do with

inappropriate therapy, placement which could even be from inappropriate

diagnosis.

Speaking from experience coming from Jersey to Florida I see both the pros and

cons. To me the main problem in areas of the country where the services are

more lax is...less advocacy on the part of the parents. I can for SURE tell you

the average parent in Jersey is WAY more aggressive to advocate then the average

parent here in Florida.

So live where you want because you are protected under Federal laws and learn

how to advocate. Squeaky wheels do get the grease.

I found some golden aspects of living in Florida with special needs/an apraxic

child. Here it is in an archive:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not that Florida is known for education standards...:o) but the
McKay Scholarship http://www.mckayscholarship.com/ I have to say is
the most amazing thing as you don't have to fight to get your child
into any other school pubic or participating private.
While I'm much happier with the neuroMDs up North - Dr. Renai Jonas (SLP) from
Boca Raton Florida who works with FAU and EI, and is a consultant to Palm Beach
County schools - is up there as one of the BEST anywhere I've ever worked with
for my son Tanner. But in general -I miss the wealth of knowledgeable about
apraxia SLPs from when I was in the NY/NJ area -but on the other hand guess
there isn't the need for it as while I used to be able to find an apraxia child
on each block in my old neighborhood in NJ (for real) I've only met one or two
others in my area that have a child with apraxia (and is in Vero about an
hour away!)
The lifestyle here in Florida has been amazing for both my boys. Swimming and
all year round sports- the theme parks or what I like to call " ride therapy "
Club Med literally ten minutes away with trapeze and sports for the boys,
rafting and jet skiing right in our backyard, dolphin therapy (we have dolphins
that come up to our backyard not that we use them for therapy!) -cranial sacral
therapy at the Upleger Institute which I have not taken Tanner to as we did this
up North -but it's so close to where I am (or dolphin assisted cranial sacral
therapy http://www.upledgerclinic.com/dolphintherapy.html ) -all at your
fingertips.
Besides right now homes are 50% off from just a few years ago -so it's
affordable and lots of extra money to be used for therapy if needed. Not all
counties are the same either -some are not just better but off the charts better
than others. I live in County Florida where Tiger Woods is moving.
County is one of the better school districts in the state -and TW is planning on
sending his child to the school that Tanner and Dakota attended.
