Guest guest
We also saw this Kemper commercial and were impressed with it. The rodeo rider wrote off the LP clown as useless and then the LP ends up saving the rider's life. It was all very well done! Kemper also has another commercial in this series where a young man in a wheelchair shows up at basketball practice, thinking that he'll just watch. The coach tells the other guys to get with it, the guys get into wheelchairs, and they _all_ play basketball together. Kudos to their ad men!! Well the bullrider's thrown off, the rodeo clown does a great job hustling the bull off the rider and out of the arena, end shot is the bullrider thanking the clown. It was a commercial that shows we can do what others believe we can not. I have to hand it to Kemper Insurance to come up with an innovative commercial. > >Rob > Vita Gagne rgagne@... Guest guest
I haven't seen the commercial and I'm sure the insurance companies intentions were well, but how many people that saw that commercial really thought about the idea that LPs can do anything? Hopefully many more than I think. Wants to be optimistic about the general public, but sees dumber and dumber shows on tv pandering to the general populations IQ level. --- Tille <ntille@...> wrote: > Hello Gang, > > I was wondering if anyone else besides myself > saw this commercial on TV the other night. Guest guest
Hi Jeane and Yes, my son who's recently dx has dark circles under his eyes too despite sufficient sleep. I did some reading which says it could be due to minerals/vit deficiency. I'm not too sure if this is true, hence i'm going to do some test to see if indeed minerals/vits are lacking from his body. Will be interested to hear fr other parents. Guest guest
My 4 1/2 yr old does and his pediatrician always says it is allergy related, but she is referring more to seasonal allergies. While seasonal allergies may contribute to the dark circles under my son's eyes, I believe it could be a dairy or wheat allergy. It is not so severe that we have actually done anything about it, though we do limit milk. I may have his neurologist do some investigating into it more. My son has severe Apraxia of speech. Hope you get some goid answers! Traci
Guest guest
Our son has those dark circles and we are told its from a food allergy or intolerance. We first thought it was from a lack of REM sleep but we are starting to believe diet pop, apples, and potatoes are the problem. Guest guest
I call them " allergy shiners " . Both of my daughters have them (they are both " typical " and have no dx allergies - however one takes allergy meds for asthma). My son (w/ aporaxia) does not have them. A past student of mine w/ a seizure disorder used to get them, his became more apparent when he was about to have a seizure or had just had one. Guest guest
My son has mild dark circles under his eyes that are worse when he is sick. He is 2 1/2 and not diagnosed apraxic and is gaining speech really quickly after I started him on fish oil. I have dark circles under my eyes and always have. I was not speech delayed at all, but as a child got some skin rashes from raw goat's milk that got better once we started drinking regular milk. My dad has the same thing, although he is not apraxic or anything, he does get horrible leg cramps that are alleviated by high doses of magnesium and potassium Liralen

Guest guest
Neurological disorders and metabolic processing disorders as well as autoimmune disorders go hand in hand. Many if not most of our kids have all of these to a greater or lesser degree. That's why the fish oil helps--becuase they cannot absorb it naturally from other sources and their bodies/brains use so much more of it to deal with the oxidative stress. That's why for some kids to absorb even the fish oil other nutrients need to be added like carnitine, vitamin E and other antioxidants that help with absorption at cellular level. So very good observation. Now you'd think doctors would notice stuff like this too and start investigating and treating their patients for the autoimmune/metabolic problems they have. Guest guest
Kim, these so called " allergy shiners " are tricky to pinpoint. There are definitely main culprits but each child is different and for us just eliminating the gluten and dairy wasn't enough, we had to eliminate soy, corn, eggs, and a whole variety of foods she had developed secondary intolernaces to. BTW, her alergy tests came back normal too, but after putting her back on the gluten and casein --in just 3 weeks she had regressed behaviorally to where she ahd been over a year and a half ago--no one could get along with her. She too had severe apraxia but with diet/supplements we're down to moderate and improving all the time. Her IGg was also a little low BTW, and the allergist admitted that with her skin eczemas and scalp psoriasis she should have shown some sensitivities and if she didn't and her IGg is so low, it means she is under-responding and a metabolic investigation is in order--it is beyond him he said. However we are seeing a DAN we trust and getting great results with diet/supplements, she's making huge progress, mainstreamed in kindergarten now and learning well, so we'll just keep doing the biomed supplements and diet, tweak it as needed and see where we go with it. i doubt a metabolic expert cna offer better treatment at this point and it's not easy to find one. DAns by definition test and treat metabolic problems--but as you know parents need to stay on top of it and be part of the co-construction of the protocol and observe all changes etc. And keep safety in mind always. DANs can get a little ahead of themselves and parents need to be really well educated as to all the benefits and potential risks and it is up to the parents to decide what options they choose and what they want to risk and what not. Not easy, but it really is up to us. Good luck! Elena From: Dojonovic <kpdojonovic@...> Subject: RE: [ ] Question for the group? Guest guest
Jeanne over the years dark circles under the eyes of some of the children in this group appears to come up often. According to one pediatrician that answered in this group this is not limited to just the apraxia/autism group -but a not uncommon reaction to any type of allergen. Not necessarily just food allergens- but could be environmental as well. I have below a collection of clips of various archives that provide theories from yeast, to dairy, to vaccine damage, to gluten and casein in the suspected " cause " ...and a few clips from an interesting thread from one parent on how fish oils helped her son who has a rare eye condition (her son is blind) that is characterized by less fat around the eye which gives the appearance of dark circles. So seems like it's not nailed down to one cause -or even if again this has anything specific to this with this group. Could be- but it's unknown still. This could just be a kid thing that a percentage of the population deal with. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~start of clip of archives starting from around 2002 to 2006 Dr. Wakefield has characterized a new form of inflammatory bowel disease which is termed autistic enterocolitis. This new variant of bowel disease has been accepted in the the field of gastroenterolgy. Dr. Wakefield has found the measles virus in the gut of autistic children in a peer reviewed study in the Lancet. Researchers in Japan have identified the measles virus in the gut of autistic kids as being consistent with the vaccine strain of measles. I haven't heard of evidence of leaky gut but the fact that vaccine strain measles is the gut of autistic kids is certainly worth looking into in my humble opinion. Large number of parents report that their children acquire diarrhea shortly after their MMR vaccine and a sickly drawn look to their faces. Our son's before and after MMR pictures are striking in their difference. The before pictures are of a healthly looking slightly chubby face. The after picture show a gaunt/haunting look with dark circles under his eyes. There was a huge picture display at a Washington DC autism rally a few years ago with before and after pictures of autistic kids and nearly all the kids exhibited the same type of before and after look. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hoping this is of interest to someone... : ) I started Austin on EFAs 2 wks and 2 days ago. The biggest changes are the attempts at words and actual words that we can figure out coming out. He's happier and no longer seems autistic as we were beginning to think he might be. Many times we aren't certain of what he is trying to say, but we are so darn happy he is getting anything out of his mouth. Yesterday he said " ama " for mama. He has slurred some sentences, saying them almost in a hum. (he's done that before but it's been a very looong time) He has put a few words together when they are presented together to him. He is displaying sounds and knowledge we saw a really long time ago. For example in playing with a phonics desk he was naming a few letters again. Last time he did that he was around 13-15 months. He labled N and M and looked for O and found it when I asked. Didn't continue to quiz those though. Letters are pretty much useless to him as he is blind and will need to learn braille. (resistant to it though) The word lion was one of the first we heard after starting the EFAs. Yesterday it became " ianl " . It sounded like lion all mixed up. He is trying to make word sounds for his song Twinkle as of last night. As for his sleep- WOW! You can't even imagine. Austin has not slept more than about 8 hours total a day for well over a year, with only exceptions being medication for illnesses. If he had extra sleep he would stay awake longer. Well, at the exact time I started the EFAs, he began sleeping about 10 hours a night! He is even occassionally taking a nap of up to 2 hours. (rare though) His eyes- not sure. I don't really know that I expect anything will happen there but I keep wondering. His disease is characterized by a flat ERG (measures rod and cone functioning), dark circles under eyes, nystagmus and profound farsightedness. Austin has glasses, but mostly for cosmetic reasons. He had begun to refuse them altogether and we were giving up on him wearing them any longer. When I put him on the EFAs I decided 2 days into it to try the glasses again. He started wearing them. He would throw them off occassionally, but was wearing them the majority of the time. Yesterday he ran into 3 big items. He never does this with or without the glasses. He threw the glasses immediately each time. As if he felt they were to blame- which is very interesting. The dark circles under his eyes are slightly lessened. I'm not sure if that's significant or just puffy eyes in the morning? Ok- didn't mean to go on so long. I love hearing updates and hope others will continue to post them. Lynn Austin 28 months (LCA) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Re: confused...yeast ? Hi , YES,YES YES !!!!!!!!!!! If your little one has had lots of anti-biotics there is a possibility that he has a yeast/candida problem !! And thrush is a yeast infection . Your child could be fighting yeast without you knowing it . Symptoms can be minor and if your child has had a yeast infection for some time they may be hardly noticeable. My son had a red ring around his anus which was sometimes itchy, a very strong sugar craving and a pale face with dark circles under his eyes. There are lots of other symptoms. Unfortunately many children actually give false negative tests for yeast ..as Charlie did... but he needed the treatment as was apparent the minute we started. You can get a number of good pro-biotics such as Culturelle and Pro- Bio Gold . Have a look at the www.kirkmanlab site and also go and ask this same question at the group site. If you have any probs get back to me as I am trying to give you the info sites for the US ( I am in the UK ) I may need to check them for you. My son has autism and when I read about the link I started him on a good specific pro-biotic ( to feed the good bacteria we should all have thriving in our gut ) and then saw a Pediatric Consultant who was happy to prescribe nystatin ( an anti-funagal) to fight yeast! When we started the nystatin Charlie increased his speech . !!! ~~~~~~~~~~~ Re: before and after photos He started the EFAs in May, I just looked it was May 19th. So far it's been 3 1/2 wks. I will look for a picture that may have been taken closer, just haven't taken the time. What I did was to look at my ofoto album for a picture to see if we were really seeing as big a difference as it seemed. We noticed the dark circles filling in pretty fast, probably about 1 1/2 wks. Most of the pictures I take of him are with his glasses on and because I hate his eyes without the glasses. He had ditched them once again before EFAs. The eye dr felt it was behavioral. It's hard to explain that he is blind and has glasses. We have always felt there was a little vision there but can't prove anything past light perception. When he ditched the glasses I was giving up. We'd had 2 prescription change lenses in the last 8 months. The shape of his eye is rather flat and for him to see, if he could or if any of his rods and cones were working, he would need things magnified 225% to see 4 ft in front of him. His glasses are being repaired. I plan to have his prescription checked again. I called the genetics dr in Houston and left the message about the speech and EFAs, as well as the change in the circles under his eyes. He has not called back yet. I also happened to find his name on similar research with EFAs in regards to a related form of blindness. I'll let you all know if that pans out to be anything neat. I feel I've found loads of research and info pointing to the EFAs and his disease. I could be hoping too much though. So, no- none of his drs' have seen him yet. ECI is due to come back and evaluate him in the next few weeks. His speech therapist did ask me if he was saying any words now. I said yes, but that I didn't want to tell her anything else so that she can tell me what SHE thinks. ; ) smirk. She will be very receptive of the information. I only hope she is able to help others by hearing about it all. I plan to fully explain all of this to his dr's. I also am seriously considering seeing and alternative medicine dr. I was told of a man who was a regular dr and switched. I'm intrigued. I think i answered all questions? um, it was definitely the proEFA that fixed the eyes. He is also taking carnosine as of last Friday. (2 400 mg a day) I am thinking he could use an uppage on DHA, but I can't decide. I'm not certain the EPA is what he needs next. But doesn't the EPA come with DHA? In the proEPA formula? In addition to the proEFA and carnosine... I have been getting a multi-vitamin down him thru a GNC spirutein brand strawberry protein mix. Oh, and I occassionally give him evening primrose oil, mostly on days i think he needs a bit more fat from the Omega 6 side. He gets little fats, good or bad. I noticed that with the evening primrose oil he gets a bit more peppy. (a good peppy) Lynn Austin 28 monthsI wanted to upload 2 comparison pictures of Austin. One from Oct and one from yesterday. It shows the dramatic affects the EFAs have made on his eyes. However, I looked and this email group has no setting for photos. Can I attach them to an email and send them through? Otherwise I guess ppl will have to write me privately to get a look. It's so flooring I wanted everyone to see it. Austin's blindness is from a genetic disorder called LCA (Leber's Congenital Amaurosis). One of the characteristic traits of it are dark circles under the eyes, due to a lack of fat tissue under them. Let me know how I can post this or write me privately and I'll send it to you. It's really unbelievable. Lynn Austin 28 months- and super glad his mom is getting him nutrition. : ) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ And from 2006 -an entire thread about dark circles under eyes with various reasons and suggestions: Here's one good one that talks about allergies " Re: Dark circles under eyes? They are often referred to as " allergic shiners " . But its not always food that's the culpret. The allergies can also be environmental, so many kids get it seasonally, like in the spring with all the blossoms, or as a result of cat dander - or some other allergen. Its always very difficult to pinpoint. But kids with allergic shiners often also have asthma, eczema or chronic sinusitis. You may want to seek out a good allergist. But if its environmental allergens - hard to avoid. " /message/46208 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =====
Guest guest
Sorry for the delayed feedback, but be persistent with allergies. As mentioned by a few people the allergies didn't show up on the skin test. Some food allergies, like gluten will be better with a blood test. We asked our ped. for a gluten test and she gave us the Celiac blood test. Told us that one of the levels was high, but that was normal. We insisted on getting a gluten test and it came back positive. Jay has been off gluten and dairy for 2 years and the difference is amazing. We saw sudden differences in behavior and his development has taken off since then. We also went to 2 allergists until we found one that would even entertain the idea of food allergies causing neurological problems.
