Your child is born with many reflexes-some you may be familiar with and some might be new to you. When you place your fingers in a baby's palm, the baby wraps his or her fingers around it. This is due to Palmar Reflex, which comes from the brainstem and is an automatic response allowing infants to respond to their environment. These first reflexes or " primitive reflexes " should eventually be retrained as the baby goes through developmental milestones. They are taken over by new reflexes called " developmental " or " postural reflexes " . When the Palmer Reflex is inhibited or goes away, it is replaced by an ability to coordinate independent thumb and finger movement allowing for appropriate manual dexterity. A child that is in grade school and has a retained Palmar Reflex will pull their hand away if you lightly stroke their palm. They might be sensitive to certain textures like sand or grass and they will have difficulty holding a pencil or applying excessive pressure to their pencil. They may also chew on their tongue while writing. Many children will work with an Occupational Therapist to help strengthen the muscles that hold the pencil. Although this has been shown to help, functional neurology takes this one step further. By retraining the appropriate reflex and working from the inside out rather than the outside in, you not only help the child with the task at hand such as holding a pencil, but you also retrain the brain allowing for optimal development and function. This allows the child to learn to respond appropriately to their environment. This can be seen as improved balance and coordination, appropriate social behavior, less toe walking, ability to copy from chalkboard to paper, less anxiety, and much more! Dr. Murtaugh will be hosting a workshop on Primitive Reflexes on October 21 at 7:00pm. To find out more, please call 973-992-2673. 4 | JCC MetroWest Special Needs Services Club JCC Junior Friends This social recreational program includes free swim, structured games & play, and arts & crafts. Does your child appear to be clumsy or uncoordinated, with a slightly awkward gait? Does he /she show an interest in organized, age-appropriate sports, but is unable to participate? Many children on the Autism Spectrum suffer from some type of motor impairment. Children with Developmental Motor Delays may have a history of delayed acquisition of motor skills such as pedaling a bike, catching a ball, climbing monkey bars, pumping themselves on a swing, and so on. They are often visibly awkward, exhibiting rigid gait patterns, odd posture, and deficits in visual-motor coordination. Poor body image and sense of self are also present and impact the child's overall performance in school and on the field. We all want our children to succeed and be accepted on the team at school, camp, or a local neighborhood. What would playing on a team with his friends do for the self-esteem of a child who not only has social difficulties, but also has a hard time throwing, catching, or kicking a ball correctly? And are positive encouragement and praise enough to teach your child with special needs how to ride a bike or play on the team? If they are not, do you just dismiss the motor difficulties as part of the disorder, or do you look for treatable options? One option is to go to a Pediatric Physical Therapist who works with children with special needs. He or she will assess the child's ability in and quality of motor planning, postural stability, ball manipulation skills, and effective sequencing and then develop an intervention to improve the skills. A further option for parents looking to improve their child's motor skills is the Yoga for the Special Child Method. This method may be practiced on an individual basis or in a non-competitive group setting with any age. By using a step-by-step, hands-on approach, with an integrated system of hatha yoga asanas (poses), eye exercises, specialized breathing exercises, music and sound therapy, and relaxation techniques, and with an emphasis on harmony and efficiency of effort, Yoga for the Special Child has been shown to enhance age-appropriate gross motor skill acquisition, and to guide children towards finding their own inner peace and serenity. When a child practices yoga on the regular basis, it strengthens and increases low muscle tone and improves motor planning, posture control, balance, and coordination which are often seen and characteristic of many children with ASD's (Autism Spectrum Disorders). Therapeutic Yoga for the Special Child Method is a wonderful way to develop a connection of oneself to the environment through space awareness. As a result, children learn to calm their mind and ease tension, concentrating on their breath, and get in touch with their body and develop the space and the body awareness needed to learn bike riding, through reciprocal leg movement and appropriate balance. The child in turn learns to play an organized sport with a smile on their face and a sense of pride, and to develop self-esteem and a sense of accomplishment that will last a lifetime. If I could play more with children, I could get better.
