We're in the same boat. You need to review the speech/academic goals.

Increase IEP speech goals via results of the assessments in all areas

conducted by school, private therapists and if needed request for IEE. You

need to show the school through assessments that your child NEEDS to

increase speech services to support IEP speech/academic goals. How old is

your son? -Beth

Subject: [ ] IEP help please!

Good afternoon! I was hoping someone could help me. My son is receiving ST

from the pre-k program at school 2 days a week, and we supplment private

therapy an additional 2 days per week. I have asked the school about

increasing his therapy, but have been told that since he's not shown

regression, they won't increase it. Well, of course he hasn't shown

regression.....we've been supplementing their services!!! ARGH! Anyway, I

remember reading somewhere that the IDEA doesn't require an actual

regression, just that his condition (apraxia) mandates a level of therapy

needed not to regress. Does anyone know where I could find that article, or

does anyone have any additional info I could take to the school to amp up

our argument for increase therapy? I love both SLP's (private and school),

but at $500/mo (ERISA ins won't cover), for the last 2 years, we need to cut

back our bill without cutting his services! Thanks for the help!

Thanks Beth! He's 4, and we jsut got him moved to the afternoon class

(kindergarten readiness class here in NC). He's met all of his non-speech

goals, and his speech has improved, but he still lags behind.

Heres an article by Marilyn Agin that has some of the info you wanted. This is

from the Links at left on this site under Apraxia information.

http://www.cherab.org/information/aginmdapraxia.html#appropriatetherapy

Do you have a diagnosis of Apraxia from a medical doctor? A Ped Neurologist or

Developmental Pediatrician--hopefully one who has experience with Apraxia. The

school cannot ignore a diagnosis from a doctor. Do they know you're

supplementing outside of school?

Thanks for the link! Yes, we do have a dx of Apraxia, and the school knows

we're supplementing. When we originially entered the school system, they would

only give him once a quarter consult services, even though the CDSA he had been

receiving 2 dys/wk. After the speech therapist meet Austin, she immediately

started him on 2 dys/wk with the school. His teachers and therapist are great,

but are being told by the school that since he's progressing, they can't add

services.
