Guest guest
I'm writing to share my feelings about 's situation and others I've read. It's hard to read all of your pain, hard because I'm reminded of my own... more than I'm comfortable with sometimes. But mostly I want you to hear that your description of your pain strikes chords of remembrance in most of us. We who have been there know how hard it is to see the outside when you are all consumed by the PAIN (nowhere near enough letters in that word for such a feeling) and the mind numbing fatigue that goes along with a flare... I can never tell how long it will last and I worry... will this be the one that never ends no matter what I try. When it ends, I admit...I don't want to remember it.. I want to act as if my life can go back to normal... what ever that used to be. But my reality hasn't included " normal " for the last 3 years. I use a scooter to get around ever since my last car wreck 2 years ago, I consistently encounter folk who assume that I just need more exercise. My family is not near enough to see my everyday stuggle, even friends I've had for years expect this to improve... even though I've told them the PA may improve, that doesn't mean I get back the damage done to my spinal cord in the werck.. they just don't get it...they can't even imagine it.. I remind them that I'm glad they can't imagine it, I hope they never do have a frame of reference for this. When people attempt to make small talk about the scooter by saying " There's what I need " implying they are tired of walking... I reply " Swap ya " , sometimes it gives them pause, other times I'm just labeled cranky. Most of the time I try to remind them and myself, that we in the US particularly are used to medical problems that are acute, you break your leg, it's set, the cast comes off... presto you're better... PA doesn't work that way. Chronic disease is not thought about... we dont't want to have chronic problems, we prefer the instantly solveable variety please! , I hope your days have gotten a bit easier by now... I wish you restful sleep and quiet days.
Guest guest
Hi Lori, I'm new to this group too. I am so sorry about your situation. Not having any legal background here at all, but maybe ask a special education attorney. Since they know about most disorders, they could get you on the right track in finding someone familiar with AS who could help your son. Poor kid, I know he must be so afraid. Good luck & best to you, Liz Houston Lori Hards <moppinmom@...> wrote: Hi to everyone. I am new and have been reading posts for awhile. I am a mom to two boys-8 and 18 both with as. Guest guest
Does your older son have a disability? If he does you may want to contact your local Disability Law Center or Protection and Advocacy Office. I would request an IEP review for your younger son now to address the teacher leaving and how they will be transitioning your son in the meantime to the changes. Guest guest
My only advice would be to talk to your local autism society chapter or a support group, and get a list of their recommended special education attorneys, or attorneys who represent special needs people. We had to do this back in September, and we found an absolutely wonderful one who has been a great help...and my son is only 5, imagine needing an attorney for a police situation for a five year old. The world has gone nuts, and I have a five year old afraid of policemen now. Seek some new help until you find someone you feel comfortable representing you, and paying...ours has taken training for autism and has an autistic grandson, so he knows his stuff. Other attorneys like this are out there. Good luck to you.. > > > > Lori Hards <moppinmom@... > <mailto:moppinmom%40sbcglobal.net>> wrote: > Hi to everyone. Guest guest
Hi Lori, I have been a Disability Advocate for the past 3 years. I have 2 suggestions. First, every state has an Office of Disability Law. They may not be able to help with this kind of case, but they can point you to someone who can. Second, look into pre-paid legal. It's not a solution, but it certainly will save you money in advise and services. Good Luck, Dave ( ) Help!!! Hi to everyone. I am new and have been reading posts for awhile. Guest guest
> met with the school on Friday and was told he is now being charged with Sexual Battery. Wow! Okay. Since he's on the autism spectrum, inappropriate touching (not just sexual) of others can be a problem for some. So - I think I would practice your argument for why this is related to his disability (part of the social interaction problems, communication, understanding personal space of people...may be able to throw some of that in with explanation). I searched for some things you can read through (I haven't read all obviously) and maybe some of it will help you with your argument and setting up a plan for school/community for him. I'll post links below. Does he have any services yet in your new home, case manager or anything yet? If there is someone from your previous city/school who knows him well (doctor, psychologist, someone at previous school...), you could contact them and ask them to write something up for you to include with your defense. http://www.edu.gov.mb.ca/k12/specedu/aut/pdf/appendixe.pdf http://www.albany.edu/psy/autism/plan1.html http://www.aspergers.com/Adolesc.htm http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/specialed/docs/autism.pdf Go to " case studies " pages 114, 110 about " Raj " (inappropriate touching) http://www.scautism.org/protect.html http://www.nas.org.uk/nas/jsp/polopoly.jsp?d=1071 & a=6001 scroll down to " inappropriate behaviour " http://www.autism-society.org/site/PageServer? pagename=about_lwa_justice These were just some quick things I pulled up. Guest guest
Not to scare you, but I would find an attorney. An attorney can help you navigate the system as well as protect your son from unfair and inappropriate punishment. If I were you, I'd also put together documentation showing that this can happen as a result of your son's diagnosis, and maybe see if your doctor can help, or a caseworker if you're in the state's regional center (or equivalent) program. I can't go into detail, my son's only 6 and I'm still in disbelief at times at what we went through this past year, but let me just say that our attorney's advice was invaluable. Police investigating your son can scare him, and if they aren't knowledgeable about autism, they may not be aware that the kids can be very literal and you don't want something taken out of context when they question him either. Good luck to you, you'll be in my prayers that this is resolved quickly and your son doesn't have to deal with unnecessary problems. aprildiamonds@... wrote: I am new to this group and I hate to introduce myself with a problem but I need help. Guest guest
Don't give up -- there are affordable ones out there. Contact your local autism society and post to local autism lists for references in your area. Not all attorneys are outrageously priced -- ours was, dare I say it, downright affordable, and I GLADLY wrote the checks. Ours has an autistic grandson and a huge field of experience, and his heart is truly in the right place. He can't be the only one. aprildiamonds@... wrote: I have called several but have yet to hear from someone or their fees are more than I can pay. -------------- Original message -------------- From: ppanda65aol You may want to contact a special education lawyer or Disability Law Center in your area. Guest guest
You need to find an advocate to help you sort out the problems. The county can't tell you that they "don't do" a particular service. Service is based on NEED of the child. So if he needs something, they need to provide it - period. Obviously, since he is having problems in class, you are smart to have asked for the aide. Since he is now being charged with "sexual battery", you will have to sort all of that out but at the school, get an "FBA" (functional behavior assessment" done so that you can make a behavior plan and have someone with him at all times until he can monitor his own behavior better. Do not stop until you get him what he needs! Visit www.wrightslaw.com for more information on your and your child's rights in the education process. RoxannaAutism Happens ( ) HELP!!!
